Should I paint ceiling white or grey?

Trying to decide on colours for the living room before the painters come in a week to redecorate.

It’s a Victorian property, high ceilings with picture rail and lovely coving. South facing with a large bay window but lots of mature trees outside do not as light as you would think. Having white shutters fitted after painting.

Plan so far is a mid grey on the walls, probably dulux chic shadow, with white skirting, picture rail and coving. But what do I do with the ceiling? White?

Maybe I should take the mid grey to the picture rail and then have a paler grey above and on the ceiling? Something like polished pebble?

We painted our living room in Chic shadow up to the ceiling
Then white skirting, picture rail and ceiling
4 years on and we still love it!

Girlonatubetrain would you be prepared to share a pic please? Pm me if you don’t want it on a public forum?

You’ve gone for the same colour as ohidoliketobe but with a white ceiling so I could compare the two

I have chic shadow with a white ceiling and love it

Right it’s decided I’ve just text the painter the walls and ceiling are going to be painted in Dulux goose down with coving, picture rail and skirting in white. Will post a picture when it’s done

I think that's a good decision. Looking forward to a picture!

Well the living room is ‘finished’ only the decorator misunderstood and painted the ceiling white! He can cone back and change if I want him too (I should think so) but I need to wait until it’s dry to make my decision

FWIW I think it looks gorgeous like that.

RatRolyPoly · 29/10/2017 17:59

You have my exact coving!

MadameJosephine · 29/10/2017 18:04

What go think of the ceiling RatRolyPoly?

I mean it looks gorgeous, but to be the shadows in the picture means it looks grey to me anyway! How does it look in the flesh? I'd say that picture shows it would look great grey, but don't change it if you like it as it is (or simply can't be bothered Grin ).

To ME, not to be!

I like it white, we've got a mix of coloured and white ceilings but that offsets nicely.
Mind you I painted my grey dining room ceiling red - which is awesome but a completely different feel.

I see what you mean about the photo but it’s definitely white in the flesh. I don’t know if I can be arsed to get him back to change it now

Wow wonkylegs I don’t think I’d be brave enough for that.

There are no other white ceilings in this flat, they all match the walls. This is what the bedrooms look like

I think white ceilings are more modern in a room like that and coloured are more traditional. If it were me I'd get them back but only because I've regretted it when I've veered off plan, be it by accident or indecision! With coving like that it'll look great either way Wink
