Does anyone get sofas re-upholstered anymore?

Just wondered whether anyone has any experience of getting a sofa re-upholstered rather than buying a new one - was it cost effective?

Oh, this question always turns into a bun fight Confused

You will get "No, it costs the same as a new sofa"

AND the

"How dare you slate upholsterers costs. The time/effort/skill involved"

I've had ours re stuffed. Company on line called All Shapes cushions. Brilliant service. Huge big Tetrad sofa and it was £400 for the two HUGE cushions you sit on. They are stuffed with foam then wrapped with feathers .

I tried to get a gorgeous vintage sofa upholstered but the cost was prohibitive. I don't want to slate upholsterers, I just haven't got that kind of money.

I'd love to have ours reupholstered. It was a pretty expensive John Lewis sofa and the frame is fine. Then I looked at the price of reupholstering - sod that! New Ikea sofa for me, I think.

Depends where in the country you are. East Midlands reupholster costs affordable.
Outskirts of London forget it. In fact cheaper to get van and deliver antique sofa / chairs to East Midlands.
For a modern sofa I would just buy a new one although I have recovered modern in the past.
My upholstery guy will also make from scratch anything you find that you like if you take him a picture.

My in laws have just this week got their hideous 1970s sofa upholstered and they claim that paying the £600 was considerably cheaper than buying a new sofa.

How much is the sofa you want? Is it more comfy than your current one? Do you want to spend £600+ on upholstering your sofa or would you rather have new at that price?

I've a quote of £1000 to reupholster a G Plan sofa which is an unusual shape. I love the sofa, so it's worth it to me as I can't buy anything similar, but it will take me a while to save up!
The upholsterer is excellent, no problem paying for quality, but it would definitely be cheaper to buy a new sofa.

I would only re-upholster a special or heirloom piece. It's expensive (and with fair reason, I did a day upholstery course and sofas are labour intensive!) but for certain things definitely worth it.

I bought two Multiyork sofas 23 years ago. Multiyork will make new covers for any of their discontinued sofas. I'm on my third set of covers. The sofas are so well made that the upholstery is as good as new.

Multiyork recovering costs roughly £3k I think for a 3 seater, a 2 seater & an armchair. Obviously varies, especially depending on chosen fabric.

Thanks for replies, seems that unless the sofa is of decent quality not really worth upholstering - i've now started another thread about sofa.sofa sofas!

I'd love to have a quality sofa that's worth redoing. My FIL just re-upholstered his own leather sofa. He's quite a diy-er.

I inherited a beautiful single chair that I wanted to have upholstered, I paid about £600 so about the same cost as a new modern one and that was 12 or so years ago. The upholsterer point blank refused to reupholster a Marks & Spencer sofa I wanted covered in the same fabric, said it wasn't of good enough quality. Now I would think Hmm but at the time I was clueless, bought a new one instead.
