Sofas in kitchen/family rooms: do they get get grim quickly?

We are just having a new kitchen/family room built and are trying to work out what to with sofas. We've seen some nice ones but they are not cheap and I don't want to spend a lot if they need replacing every few years. So my question is, do sofas in open plan kitchens get smelly/greasy/grim really quickly? Also does anyone have any advice e.g. do I need removable covers?
It's quite a big room and the sofas will be at least 5m away from the hob (which has a powerful extractor fan).

Thanks!

Not had any issues with mine getting grim. I've had it 4 years.

I have a leather one in my kitchen/family room. It has been there for 11+ years. No issues with smell etc and it can be wiped if spilled on. The worst thing to befall it is pluck marks from my naughty cats. It has a battered charm that I like. It's in a 1930's shape, not a big DFS elephant scrotum style one.

Got a fabric removable covers one in white. Usually has throws over it and only wash it if the cat walks on the arms of it with muddy paws.
Also have a leather chair. Again that's slight animal damage and boisterous children diving on it and making dens not cooking.

So I wouldn't worry too much.

My fabric ones have been fine in my kitchen diner for the last 2 years.

Thanks so much, that is reassuring!
It will definitely be fabric as DH is vegan and won't have leather. So I don't need to have removable covers/throws (though it might be helpful)?
The only way of getting through the building work is dreaming of my perfect, clean, dustless future (?!) and I don't want to risk that with smelly sofas!

Ours isn't grim but between window, French door and sky light and has some sun damage which I hadn't considered when we planned the room

Had mine for 3 years and it's not been noticeably aged by being in kitchen/living area. My 10 month olds puking ability has adversely aged itGrin
To be fair I'm certainly not the worlds keenest chef so if you spend hours cooking every day maybe it would be an issue but if you don't I can't see why it would be a problem.

I have a huge kitchen and love having part of it as a living space with a sofa, it changes the dynamics of the room. People can sit and chat while I cook, I can relax there in peace if the sitting room is full of teenagers.
I wouldn't get hung up about how long it will last really. If it bothers you you could have it cleaned now and then or get leather.

We bought a cheapo drs sofa in a hurry for Xmas 7 years ago it was £600 and is looking worn now but when the kids pounce on it and rub their grubby hands on it I'm glad I didn't spend more

I had a fake leather one for years. Very good with children and no dead animals involved!
