Sanding & staining/painting dining table-pics

Has anyone sanded & stained a dining table? Have bought this lovely old battered one for £40 & excited to de-orange it!

Any recommendations of makes of stain/varnish? Preferably hardwearing & not too shiny if possible-is that a contradiction?

New kitchen will be painted in F&B house white with F&B string painted island. Should I paint the legs or sand & stain them too? We'll have oak floor like attached.

Osmo polyx oil is sold for floors but completely stain proof for tables.

I'd use a hand sander to get it back to the bare wood then use Osmo. Or if you want to you could Osmo the top and paint the rest a colour to tie in with your kitchen.

I have a similar table, I sanded it back and just left it as it was, the top just gets a scrub with some cleaning spray, marks like Sharpie pens that won't scrub off I sand off. I will probably paint the legs eventually in a F&B eggshell.

Splendid, thanks so much! Will investigate these

Can I use woodstain before the osmo?

Looks v good that water beads on it, & does it prevent stains soaking through to the wood from messy children?!

Also if I wanted to paint the legs to match the kitchen units do I just use F&B eggshell? Should I clear varnish after or should it be ok?

Am pretty excited to get it done, will post a photo when finished. Thanks!

You can use a wood stain or one of the tinted oils. Hannants are a good range of stains.

I have Osmo on our oak worktops and have only had one stain in 2 years which just sanded out then I re oiled. I think it will be oak to stain the wood then oil it, are you wanting it darker? If you use eggshell there's no need to varnish after. Osmo do a range of tinted oils but not sure on the colour options, I only tried the whitewash effect.

If you want the scrubbed pink farmhouse look, then use wood bleach after sanding. Follow with 2 coats of watered down paint in an off white, then 2 v. v. thin coats of water based matt vanish. Lightly sand when dry and finish with wax - I've never use Osmo, but have heard good things about it. They do a white lime wash wax, and if it's as good as it's supposed to be, you could leave out the second and third steps, going straight to wax coat.

Painting the legs the same colour as your island will bring everything together nicely.
