The mini window in my front door.

I have a window in my front door. It's at head level, has a pattern in glass in it, some is obscured glass, some isn't. It's about 25/30cm by 15cm. I don't like the fact that people can see through it on a night. But how on earth do I cover it? I can hardly put up a tiny curtain can I? It would be something a fairy sized and would surely look silly! These windows are not rare, so my dear MN helpers- what in earth can I do with it? I have googled curtains for tiny Windows but I just get pictures of smallish house Windows, nothing as small as this and nothing on a door. Advice? Suggestions? Pictures? Help??

Is it smooth glass? I've used this type of stuff previously- with careful application it can look brilliant: www.amazon.co.uk/White-Privacy-Frosted-Film-Window/dp/B0026PEIV4?tag=mumsnetforum-21

You can buy a door curtain. It is just like a normal curtain you hang above the door and pull it back during the day.

Olecranon- I don't want a full length door curtain - mainly because there isn't enough room to pull one back during the day !! That's an option I had looked into and discarded because of practicalities. Have you any other suggestions though?

Perper - no, it's nit smooth. The pattern in it is made with different types of glass and ' leading' so I would have to cut your reccomendation into obscure shapes and although it would succeed in obscuring the glass it still does not stop people seeing - albeit an obscured- me/ husband/ child on a night when we have the light on.

We had the same thing in our old house. We bought a roller blind at the same width and same color as the door and attached it at the top edge of the door. When it was rolled up it was very unobtrusive and at night/when we wanted privacy we rolled it down enough to cover the window.

Imfinehowareyou · 15/08/2017 09:21

Can you paint it?

Bluntness100 · 15/08/2017 09:24

Replace it with reflective coated glass that people can't see in.. Won't cost too much if it's tiny. Problem solved once and for all.

Have you tried walking past your door at night time and seeing how much a person can really see inside? The window sounds pretty small, and half obscured, and probably looking in to a narrow hallway, so the answer is probably not much.

yorkshireyummymummy · 15/08/2017 11:00

Joinourclub- no I haven't done that. It's a really good point and I'm going to try it tonight. I just don't like the thought that somebody ' could ' see me and I don't know they are there- too many hours watching horror movies has probably warped my mind! I think ' scream' made me like this!
Bluntness- that is an option, I'm going to look into it.
Imfine - no can't / don't want to paint out the glass. It would look wierd I think.
User 143......- never thought of that but I like the idea. Going to check that out!
Thank you all so much for taking the time to respond. I'm relatively new on mumsnet, just finding my way round, and I'm amazed at how people are so willing to help. Many many thanks.

Just going back to the curtain idea - if the door opens straight into your living room then a door curtain on a portiere rod would work. The portiere lifts the curtain out of the way when you open the door. The curtain would cover the window and provide extra insulation in winter.

Wow fudge- that's it!mthats the answer!! Perfect! Thank you !

Glad I could help! I bought one from a catalogue company for my first house years ago - wasn't very expensive and you can buy single door curtains.

dontcallmelen · 17/08/2017 19:14

Next do portiere poles & dunelm do door curtains I think, you can get them on eBay to, I had one made in laura Ashley fabric wasn't very expensive, very useful in winter keeping out draughts.
