Agree with the chalky grey (assuming the carpet isn't too yellow toned) or white. If you do this don't bother picking out the relief in a different colour. Replacing handles is a great idea for a quick update.
Is the bed the previous owner's? What does yours look like? I was going to suggest changing the headboard, maybe a dark grey padded one. Not sure the valance on the current one is helping the look either
I'm not crazy about the bedside alcoves with shelves. Is there any way to get them out without making a mess? I'd also ponder removing the bedside drawers and fitting a small floating shelf or slim unit either side instead. Open up the space so the focus isn't on the wardrobe monolith!
At least the current bedside drawers are functional if they have to stay. The arched alcoves look dated/mdf-tastic imo.
The overbed units definitely aren't helping but appreciate it may be too difficult to remove them neatly, plus the lights are wired in there somewhere. Maybe another poster can advise. If it's too much hassle concentrate on the bedside units.
I actually had similar when I moved in and paid a handyman to rip the whole lot out. I made good the walls myself and painted then bought the tallest Pax wardrobe system. It wasn't as expensive as I feared. Might be worth getting a couple of quotes.
What size are the wardrobe doors? They don't happen to be Ikea Pax standard sized do they?! 50cm wide, 201/236cm tall.
You could replace the voiles behind the wardrobe glass with a colour that ties in with the room. Dark grey via ebay? Or fabric to match the new curtains.
Buy a new set of freestanding drawers and larger wall mirror or a small upholstered bedroom chair and a large-ish framed artwork/mirror to go above.
I like the freestanding mirror. Assume it's leaving with the previous owners? Consider getting a new one in a complementary colour/design.
What's on the wall at the foot of the bed?
Just a selection of ideas! Presume you've got the wall colour, curtains, bedding and lampshade covered
