It seems to be a lovely room, but cluttered. I'd go for better storage in the alcoves to hide the DVDs etc. Can you move the cupboard and storage box there. The other storage box could go next to the sofa. The mantelpiece objects would look better grouped rather than spread out and if possible less of them. Can you find something less bulky for the tv to sit on? Maybe a spot of colour somewhere, cushions, throws?
Personally I'd get rid of the blinds, they add to the fussy cluttered look.
There will be others with suggestions along soon.

Thanks jt05 yes it is cluttered and a bit beige as is the whole house. I think I need to injections personality!

Are you able to gut it and start again? It's a bit of a blank canvas. Replace all furniture. Put tv on wall. De-clutter big time. Remove rug and storage boxes and brown picture frame as looks dated. That's just what i would do though. It'll be great once you have got stuck in!

Fewer, taller bookcases/ units, for example in the alcoves. Or built in cupboards either side at floor level and shelves higher up.

Could you store most of the toys in the playroom/dining room and keep a small selection in the lounge?

I'd also lose the blinds, do they serve a purpose?

I can't quite tell by the proportions of the room - could you have the sofa under the window (in front of the radiator)?
Obviously don't have it touching the radiator Grin
If this works try the expedit on its side where sofa was and have the tv angled on top of it? Position glass side table where expedit was.

Lose the boxes on the floor in front of the radiator and have the expedit filled with baskets/ inserts instead.

I would relegate most of those toys and clutter to the playroom - get more storage for that room, possibly the 16 hole kallax I mentioned on your other thread, which you could use to divide the space in there. My living room is my sanctuary and even if the kids play in there during the day, they know better than to leave it in there!

How about a colourful throw for the sofa? Or colourful cushions? And build some shelves in the alcoves for storage. Mount the tv on the wall? A feature wall with wallpaper or a nice colour?

Fortunatepiggy · 19/07/2017 22:41

Thanks have decided the electric fire and surround need to go too as look a bit cheap!

I would put the to on the wall above the mantle, and have built in units, the bottom half of the alcoves, and shelves on the top, and hide all those dvds in the cupboards. I thinks it's fine to have all that stuff if you use it, but you need storage that means it's not on display all the time.

noenemee · 19/07/2017 22:47

You have a play room? then all DC stuff needs to go in there.

I'm not a fan of office blinds in the home, so yes, I'd lose those and buy a new pair of floor length curtains from somewhere like Home Sense or TK Maxx, so not expensive, chose a colour and buy some matching cushions.

My starting point would be to remove everything from the room that you either don't love, or don't want to sit and look at when you're in there with adults. Once you've done that you can look at the space through fresh eyes.

BrieAndChilli · 19/07/2017 22:49

It's all a bit beige, you need a new sofa, a nice bold colour.
Agree that alcoves need to have more storage, get rid of thoses white boxes under the window and maybe get a coffee table that doubles as storage instead.

smudgedlipstick · 19/07/2017 22:50

Just read you have a playroom, maybe the. I'll of the toys should go in there to allow you to make this a relaxing room. A big warm coloured rug that fills the floor space will make it feel more homely, and as someone else suggested, if there is the room, the sofa should go under the window with the tv on the wall.

Misty9 · 19/07/2017 23:42

Actually with your two existing kallax units you would have a 16 hole One, so I'd stand both of them on end next to each other in the playroom and chuck all toys in those. Definitely move the play kitchen into the playroom. If budget allows you could then get one of those snuggler chairs where the kallax was in the sitting room by the window.

Basically a good declutter and introduce some colour cheaply with cushions rugs etc. Ikea is your friend :)

GingerKitCat · 19/07/2017 23:47

I'd also go with a new sofa if possible (didn't want to be cheeky and knock your existing one!).
Perhaps something with legs to make it seem less imposing and allow heat to circulate if in front of radiator. Lots of lovely statement colours around or you could go neutral with bright cushions. Purples and greys maybe?

I recently ripped out a fire surround and fire. It was probably expensive but just didn't suit the room. I had a builder make good the alcove and install a slate hearth and floating mantel. I had my doubts but I've put a faux wood burning stove heater in the space. I rarely use the fan heater function as the central heating is very efficient but the flickering light in autumn/winter is surprisingly cosy and realistic!

Fortunatepiggy · 20/07/2017 07:52

Yes def need a new sofa. This one was cream leather before my ds arrived! Was holding off until he's older but might be persuaded to get one in the sake. Quite like the idea of a corner one.

Never heard of fake log burners but will investigate!

Also like ideas of moving sofa under window or on other wall.
