Need a budget kitchen

I've been in my house for 10 years now and the kitchen was never to my taste, but perfectly functional.

However, it's now starting to look a bit tired - the doors are laminated and some of that is flaking off in places, it's warped where some of it has got wet due to a leak from the fridge.

I'm a single parent, so I don't have a big budget, although I currently have £5000 in savings that could be put towards a new kitchen.

Has anyone managed a budget kitchen? And are ikea any good? My white goods are up to date as they needed replacing recently, and I have a good quality Neff oven that I'm happy to stick with, so those costs would be minimal.

If you did yours on what's considered a tight budget, how much did you spend? Including fitting? How big is your kitchen?

It may be just a pipe dream & I'll have to watch the kitchen slowly fall apart....

I think you would easily manage with that budget for ikea.
I bought ex display units from a local showroom. There was a scratch on one of the walnut work tops that I have easily hidden and a couple of non noticeable scuff marks. I got them for a fraction of the cost (250 instead of 2000). We fitted ourselves and learnt how to lay the floor and tile.
Also, look out on eBay and the like if you are not choosy about brand new - lots of people offer cabinets when they have a refit.

We got our kitchen from diy-kitchens for very little money. It's being fitted today and I'm so excited to see it!

I would with an IKEA kitchen without hesitation. I'd go and have a look and get the kitchen priced up. If you don't need white goods, don't change sockets or plumbing it should be doable. Might be worth asking around for recommendations of kitchen fitters to get some quotes too? A friend built her own ikea kitchen cabinets but got someone else to do the actual fitting to keep costs down.

@Tootsiepops, how is your kitchen looking now?! I'm about to order a kitchen, would love to see what you went for...

Tootsiepops I'm trying to work out whether to go with IKEA or diykitchens.com for my kitchen (which will go in my yet to be built extension!) How is yours now it's in? And any ideas on the price difference?

I got mine from Wickes, worked out what I needed, then got a local handyman to fit it. You could take the old one out, save some money.

If it's just the doors that are tired - but the cabinets and layout are good - you could just have the doors replaced ?!?!

Nb.i design a lot of kitchens (big and small ) for people buying from DIY kitchens and Ikea, and they all seem very happy with the end product ! So positive reviews for both of those !
