I don't have a style.

Right, so I thought designing a kitchen/dining extension would be one of the most fun activities ever, but it turns out I have absolutely ZERO style and I want to cry because I'm definitely going to make the wrong choice.

Only moved in a couple of months ago and already realise I've made serious errors with the upstairs colours so going to have to re-do them, but at least that's only paint.

I'm absolutely terrified of picking the wrong kitchen colour/style/layout, putting doors in the wrong place etc and being stuck with them for years.

How did people find their 'style'? Do normal people use interior designers??

Please help MN style gurus.

Sign up for pinterest and stick in terms like "kitchen" and pin stuff you like, you might well find a trend to what kind of look you go for.

Part of your problem might be that you're doing it too quickly? I find that you need to let things settle for a little bit before making decisions. And we all make catastrophic mistakes at some point. It's a learning process, have you gone to pinterest and houzz, etc, and looked to see what you like and what commonalities there are?

Some people do use interior designers, so don't feel weird about that if you need to. Kitchens are especially big decisions.

Second using pinterest for ideas. Once you know what style you like best visit some kitchen showrooms to see how it looks in the flesh. Try not to be too swayed by current fashion. Once you have some idea of the style you are after then colour schemes will be easier.
When I planned my kitchen I used the ikea kitchen planning tool to work out layout. I found this invaluable as you can see a 3d representation of how the kitchen might look and so could iron out most snags that way.

I completely understand where you're coming from. Making decorating decisions, especially with deadlines, can be pretty stressful. If you're having trouble choosing you're own style, why not just replicate something you have seen that you like? You really don't need to reinvent the wheel. As someone said, find an image on Pinterest that speaks to you and copy the worktop, the wall colour the floor etc. Or if you could also think in terms of time period. For example if you live in a period home you could draw inspiration from that.

When it comes to paint colours, if you're not sure what colours or schemes speak to you then why not paint the whole house in a warm (non stark) white and use colour in the furnishings and accesories. Much easier that getting colours right. For example we have painted our whole house in Farrow and Ball Pointing (walls, dado, ceiling skirting, cornice - everything!) which is a timeless and classic white that feels fresh but never cold. It works as a neutral backdrop and you can't go wrong. Gosh I think I may have just rambled on incessantly Hmm

Thanks all.

I do have a Pinterest board- it's just a little all over the place. I think I need to carry on with this for a little while though and as suggested wait for themes to start emerging.

Not rambling gerbita - I think you're right with having a neutral base, that's where I've gone wrong already, trying to be too exciting with colours on the walls!

Back to Pinterest I go...
