Show Me Your Box Room...

or at least help me design mine, please!

We live in a teeny tiny 2 bed one box room one double, box room is currently a study for DP but he will no longer need it as of next week so we want to turn it into a guest room.

We already have a sofa bed in the living room but think it would be nice to have a separate room if just one person is staying over so we don't wake them up when we want to use the living room etc.

Do you have a box room as a guest room? How can I make it "homely" without being cramped? Ideally we want a single bed, desk (so it could double as a study if needed) and some shelving in there, anything else is a bonus.

DP has ruled out loft beds as childish and I tend to agree. Any advice appreciated!

I can provide a floor plan if needed, we don't have any weird bulkheads for the stairs or anything like that though!

Do you often have single guests to stay? Would the plan be for a single bed with a blow up mattress on the floor?

How big is the room?

HairsprayBabe · 01/06/2017 14:40

Yes, several single friends who stay over, currently either sleep on the sofa, or if sofa is taken by other guests on an airbed on the floor in the box room.

The room measures 9'5" x 6'7" (2.87m x 2m) with a window on the back wall, small electric radiator under the window and the door in the bottom left corner of the room if viewing from birds eye - see not to scale diagram.

We have a similar sized room.6'04 x 8'04 (1.93m x 2.54m) we originally had the bed on the longest wall which leaves very little walkway up the side of the bed and then no space for anything else.
our room was slightly narrower than the length of a standard single bed so we bought a cheap one wooden one and cut an inch off of each side support and made it fit to the width of the room (under the window)
This made the room seem so much more spacious and we have fit in a cupboard for storage (about the size of a desk) and a book shelf instead of just the bedside table and bed. Because the bed is along the shortest part it feels less like a galley

also have a radiator under out window but its small and very rarely on! my pic is definitely not to scale :)
I am trying to get ideas on what colours to decorate it now. bedding is white, furniture is light wood but need a colour for the walls which i am currently filling and sanding

LBOCS2 · 02/06/2017 14:05

Ours is laid out almost identically to Curly's. Except we have bookshelves instead of a bedside table or cupboard.

MrsBadger · 02/06/2017 14:08

And do buy a 2'6" single bed instead of a standard 3'

(Our box room is actually pretty big and has said narrow bed, bedside table, bureau and lots of bookshelves. And 4 spare duvets and all the not-yet-put-away camping stuff… Confused )

HairsprayBabe · 02/06/2017 14:14

I really like that layout, looks much more useable that way.
Do you not find it a pain getting bedding in the correct size for a smaller bed? I like that layout, the radiator is electric so I am concerned about covering it but it is very rarely on so I am torn!

We have a pull out under bed so we can put it into a double when we have couple-guests. It works quite well :)

ACurlyWurly · 02/06/2017 14:53

Our mattress on the shortened bed is normal size it fits snugly into the space so bedding is not a problem, but i would think that a smaller mattress would just require a bit more tucking in. Our radiator is not electric so it doesn't worry me if it comes on low in that room, and as you can see from sizes the room is so bloody small it gets warm quickly.
The bed I bought was a cheap pine one from ebay.

we have a lot of storage space under the bed as a result. We have a sofa bed in the living room so we also keep the bedding for that vacuum packed under the spare room bed too.

Here's mine at the moment - not sure it's quite the look you're going for though Grin

Grinall homes should have a kitten room!!

PurpleDaisies · 02/06/2017 15:05

Awww! I want your kitten room toomanybuttons.

As per PP, I'd choose a bed with a pull out under bed so you can make a double. There are lovely ones around and some day-bed styles look good. IKEA do one that has an extra mattress and storage.

Another thing, try to change the hinge on the door so that it opens into the hall way then you have complete flexibility.

Have wall mounted storage. Lots of hooks on the back of the door for hanging clothes/towels. Or a ladder style storage unit.

HairsprayBabe · 02/06/2017 15:18

I think the room is big enough for a single under the window at a standard length, will look up the pull out double, could be handy for couples, we like parties and people often stay over but I fear we are getting too old for airbeds!

OHh my goodness!!! please may i have your kittens!!!!

HairsprayBabe · 02/06/2017 15:46

Yeah ours gets like that beyond I am hoping if we swap it to a guest bed we will be less likely to dump stuff in there?

I am probably wrong about that though 😂

Who invented boxrooms I hate them they are bloody difficult! All bedrooms should be doubles when I am queen I will enforce this as law!

Buttons, that is exactly the look I would be going for, left to my own devices. Pesky children, needing bedrooms.

MrsBadger · 02/06/2017 17:34

Re guest beds, we have one like this (pricey I know, it was a gift) - folded it is 2'6" but opened and (vitally) zipped together it is a very comfy 5' king size. BUT in this house the box room is too small for a king, so it's actually in dd's room for girly sleepovers and the guests get the sofa bed downstairs Blush.

fabulousathome · 23/06/2017 09:14

Try looking up www.study bed.co.uk I've wanted one of those for ages.

JunefromAccounts · 23/06/2017 14:30

Buttons - I hope you're going to get the cat neutered before she has another litter. And make sure everyone who takes a kitten gets them neutered before they get the chance to breed.
