(lighthearted thread)
Does anyone else ever despair at online inspiration photo's of interiors?

I'm about to move into a new flat, so been looking online for ideas and tips to save space, etc. Ikea really good for this, but have stumbled into a world hitherto unknown to me - instagram famous decor bloggers!
WTF?

So right now I am tired of seeing endless images of the SAME:
*Flokati rug, the one in cream with black diamond design.
*Y-back chairs.
*Sectional sofas regardless whether they fit in the room or not.
*Massive expanses of artfully designed desk space in vast sized rooms that appear to never get used.
*Geo shaped lamp shades or those Scandinavian style exposed filament bulbs hanging everywhere, even ten in one row over a small table.
*Homes that are so large it boggles the mind. I searched for inspo for small apartments and what came up? Tons of images claiming to be small spaces which were actually football pitch sized with ceilings as high as a warehouse (don't forget those exposed pipes!)......one tiny mid-century sideboard in middle of this wast expanse looking lonely and uncomfortable.

God why is everything trend driven so damn soulless?

Ok I like white, and I love the Soderhamn sofa, but I need to wind my neck back in and ponder some reality.

I have a Beni Ourain rug in our bedroom, it's older than I am and from morocco, I collect different types I have a few Kilims and a Boucherouite in DDs room. With the exception of the rag rug which can go in the washing machine they are a nightmare to keep clean and I have to take them outside and beat them as hoovering is pretty ineffective at removing the dust.

I also have lots of 'ethnic' objects as a PP called them dotted around, a juju hat from Zimbabwe on the wall, an ostrich egg from South Africa, various trinket boxes from Egypt, silver tray and jug with Arabic writing on them, some big crystal formations, silk fans from china, all sorts of things that I have picked up on my travels or my father brought back for me when he was working away a lot. I buy something for the house wherever I visit I like having visual memories dotted around to cheer me up on a bad day. I agree it's totally naff to buy fake 'artefacts' or indeed a whole curated collection but I like to think when I'm an old lady I'll have a house that resembles a dotty Victorian collector.

I don't think a lot of these interiors inspiration posts are actually inspiration, they are as you say all very samey or rely on having an enormous house with very specific architectural features. It's like bloggers, they all end up looking the same and being totally boring eventually.

Oh and these guys actually have a swing in their (not small, they live in Idaho) family room. I listen to their podcast and they have talked about how much use their girls get out of it. www.chrislovesjulia.com/2016/08/familyroomisfinished.html But they also talk about the fact that they had a trampoline in there for a while, so they aren't shiny perfection all of the time.

I don't buy artwork to match my decor, but I am guilty of matching what I've got. For example, I just painted my bathroom purple, so replaced the blue seaside-y painting with a couple of prints, previously hung in my hall, which feature purple. Is that allowed?

Everything evolves, though, doesn't it? And nothing is permanent. Every grey kitchen and navy living room will eventually need repainting in whatever the colour of the day happens to be. And fiddle-leaf figs die.....

WiltingTulip · 24/05/2017 01:27

CointreauVersial I'd say that's the joy of art! Mine get moved frequently and walls are painted to compliment them.

MrsJamin · 24/05/2017 08:19

No! Fiddle leaf figs will never die! Confused
I find apartment therapy the right side of normal-sized-houses done with a bit of style. It was aimed at renters to begin with so they don't even presume you can change a lot of the structural features of the house.

I agree with so much of this. I think a big problem is that all the photos are lit the same way. So staged and artificial.

scissormister · 30/05/2017 22:12

I don't think the dark kitchens trend will last. Too dreary in the British winter (and hard to see the spiders till you've put your hand on them!)

I was clustering frames 10 years ago! Didn't realise this was a 'thing' until I started seeing cluster guides on pinterest etc.

My name is Zelda, and I have books arranged in colour order... next to a grey wall Blush

I remember one issue of an interior design magazine I used to buy featured three 'Readers' homes and not only were they identical, but so were the women who owned the properties! They were all barefoot, wearing blue jeans and a white shirt and all had long blonde hair. They were all holding a cup of coffee whilst grinning at the camera.

I have no idea of my point but I remember feeling like there was a glitch in the matrix.

I've just joined that DIY facebook page on the recommendation of a pisstaker friend. OMFG, wallpaper on the floor and fablon on kitchen worktops Shock The 'hunning' has reached critical mass too.

Concon123 · 14/10/2017 11:07

Is there any need to judge other people's homes though?
Far too much time on your hands if you feel the need to talk about other people's houses on an Internet forum and get aggravated by trends. It's called a trend for a reason, just like everything in primark is currently a trend. Get a life Smile
