King or Super King bed?

Right, so DP managed to break our new bed beyond repair by trying to do 'a Bruce Lee' kick flip to get up, you know instead of sensibly just getting out of bed like a normal person. So we need a new bed, despite only buying the current one 6 months ago. We currently have a king size bed but now that DD cosleeps with us there isn't really enough room as we all like to starfish. She still feeds frequently through the night at 7 months so I doubt she will be going into her own room any time soon so we are considering getting a super king.

They are 30cm wider than a king size though, and although we will appreciate the extra space our bed is already wider than the chimney breast it is pushed up against and I don't know if an even bigger bed will look ridiculous. There would be space if I moved the bedside drawers over a bit, as well as to walk around the bed but would it look strange? I am not too bothered about having a headboard as I think that will look weird but the pillows might fall off the back because of the narrow chimney breast. Also going to get a hideous divan base with drawers as we are struggling for storage.

So MN jury what's the verdict? New King size or switch to Super King? Photo attached for clarity as I may not have explained well

King or Super King bed?

If you go super king then check you'll be able to get a bed that fits - I was in a rental with a SK and the mattress was fine but the extra inches from the actual frame of the bed made it too big for the space. Constant shin bruises.

Tk maxx are good for super king bedding!

CointreauVersial · 05/05/2017 21:19

I had a Super King during my 20s, and it was just too damned big! DH and I are both quite "tidy" sleepers, and have never co-slept with DCs. Sometimes I wasn't even sure if he was in the bed with me.

Our current house has a smaller bedroom; I actually sold the bed to the people who bought the old flat. We downsized to King, which is perfectly big enough for us.

Regarding the chimney breast, I wouldn't worry; as long as it's symmetrical it will look OK. Maybe find some narrow/tall bookcases for either side of it, to fill the gaps?

Superking

IrregularCommentary · 05/05/2017 21:24

Definitely super king. I love ours so much. We have a zip lock super king, so basically two single beds zipped together (but without the middle being uncomfortable to lie on). Dh can fidget to his heart's content now, without me waking up wanting to throttle him.

AngelicaSchuylerChurch · 06/05/2017 01:37

Super king.

Loaf do a non-hideous divan base with drawers, and you can choose your fabric.

bonjovigirl · 06/05/2017 02:06

Superking. Every time.
Our bedroom is narrow (only just 20cm wider than the super king frame) so we'd have trouble accessing A king size bed from each side as well. Went for a low bed similar to this (www.warrenevans.com/beds/oriental-bed/?s=8) so that it was easy to clamber in and out (good for the kids too). No storage option under the bed though which is a shame.
Dunelm do a good range of bedding for super kings.

Super king and don't worry about the chimney breast

Daytona79 · 06/05/2017 08:14

100% superking especially if you have kids. We have one and 4 of us sleep in it , not by choice but our 2.5 year old and 8 month baby have ended up there.

MistyMeena · 06/05/2017 08:17

Super king if you can - we have an ottoman one and although it is heavy to lift there is so much storage.
Plus I've never slept better - I like my own space!

Orangebird69 · 06/05/2017 08:19

Superking all the way. Ds is 18mo and we still co sleep. Superking is a must!

Waitingforsherlock · 06/05/2017 08:22

Just downsized from a superking to a king and now I'm worried. Have a low ceiling and although mega comfy SK too dominant in the room and always looks scruffy somehow due to the dimensions. Also created a hillock in the middle due to uneven weight distribution

llangennith · 06/05/2017 08:29

Whatever size you get remember to buy a waterproof mattress protector at the same time!
Wish I had room for a superking size bed...

silkpyjamasallday · 06/05/2017 10:39

DP has been persuaded that a Super King is necessary, I'm so excited for the extra space. Sleep was important to me before DD but now it has VIP status.

I like the idea of bookshelves to make up the difference between the headboard and chimney breast, and extra storage is always welcome, we have a few carpenter friends so will get them to have a look once the bed is in if I think it looks strange.

I STRONGLY recommend getting a zip and link superking mattress. We had an absolute bugger of a time getting our SK mattress around the turn in the stairs and we can never now move...

ChunkyHare · 06/05/2017 16:21

I second Angelica, we have a superking zip and link, so 2 x 3ft mattresses zipped together. We have a mattress topper on and refer to our bed as "the cloud" because it is soooooo comfy.

I would extend the chimney breast to match the size of the bed, we have a divan base but we are trading up for an ottoman lift after buying the children ottoman beds for Christmas. Unbelievable amount of storage that is usually wasted.

We bought our single beds from Beds on Legs and our headboard so we are buying the matching base. They send samples of the fabric out too.

We have always had a superking duvet no matter what our bed size and lots of shops sell superking bedding. My children are 14 and 11 and still get into our bed every morning. It is lovely to have us all fit in.

We have superking pillows too plus normal pillows in front as otherwise a normal pillow would look lost. So everyone can have their head on a pillow.

Kokusai · 07/05/2017 11:33

Oh no I think I've made a massive mistake.

I've gone from a SK (180cm) to a EU King (160cm) and bought all new bedding and duvet etc.

I felt a SK was a bit redic as DO is only staying 2 nights a week st mine now (we were living together with a SK before I moved). Also I wasn't sure the room could take a SK.

But now I have the King I see that a SK would have fitted and when DP stays it's quite tight :-(

Kokusai · 07/05/2017 11:33

People please reassure me that a 160 wide bed is ok for 2 adults with. I children!

AngelicaSchuylerChurch · 07/05/2017 18:18

Kokusai does your DC co-sleep with you?

silkpyjamasallday · 08/05/2017 10:46

Does anyone know if you get an ottoman lift bed if you can have a different headboard? The ones I'm looking at don't have headboards and I have my eye on a curvy one that's sold separately, but will the bed be able to open if there is a headboard?

OP posts:
Kokusai · 08/05/2017 11:30

AngelicaSchuylerChurch
Sorry I mean no DC not 1 DC.

AngelicaSchuylerChurch · 08/05/2017 19:09

Kokusai oh, king size will be FINE then!

OP can't comment on ottoman beds which open from the end but ours opens from the side and accommodates a headboard quite happily. They tend to have a spring mechanism inside to help you to lift them.

Bluntness100 · 08/05/2017 19:13

Not sure about the ottoman question, but superking defo. It will actually look better as right now it looks like you tried to match the size and failed.

I honestly look at double beds now and wonder how the hell people sleep in them. Ours is superking and whilst it is rather large, it's totally worth it..

EnidButton · 09/05/2017 15:25

We could've got a super king in easily but DH insisted it'd be too big. Wish I hadn't given in now tbh. He's 6ft2 and although he's not at all overweight, he rolls over like a mammoth. 😠 An extra few inches would've been great. Best nights sleep I've ever had was in an American superking bed.

I know you've already decided but for anyone else not sure, I think if you can fit it up your stairs and you'll have room either side of the bed, then go superking.

ErnesttheBavarian · 09/05/2017 15:35

We have a super king. We each choose a different softness mattress. Dh's is firmer than my lovely squishy one. We each have a single duvet. So being is not loads more, or limited, or difficult to change, and we have a lovely sleep. So I recommend super king with 2 single mattresses and 2 single duvets.
