Carpets for 3 bed terrace. Tips and cost?

I’m trying to budget for new carpet and underlay in our house. It’s your typical modest London terrace: 13 stairs, landing with small step; large master with bay, plus 2 medium sized rooms that just fit a double bed in.

Haven’t measured yet but just thought I’d sound you lot out. How much did you pay if you don’t mind? Should I negotiate a deal with Carpetright types or go local?
And I hear lots of good things about Cloud 9 underlay. Is this something we can buy and lay ourselves?

Any rules about cheap underlay: expensive carpet, or expensive underlay: medium carpet?

Thanks

Hi,we have used Carpetright in the past but this time we'll be using a local independent carpet fitter which has been recommended by loads of people on a FB Mum's forum I use. A couple of friends have used him and he's very competitive.
As for underlay.....it's been many years since I carpeted so no idea of cost!Probably mid range for underlay I would suggest.

I'm in SE London if you want the guy's number.

Never skimp on the underlay, that's what will make the difference.

And I've always found it better to go local but recommended with carpet suppliers & layers, steer clear of the big chains, false economy and local firms often know their stuff & can make proper recommendations rather than the salespeople at Caroetright.

Ooh yes please. I'm near you. Could you share his details? Thanks.
Was thinking about popping in to the carpet place in forest hill, and one in Beckenham I hear about a lot.

Buy underlay online yourselves - it's one of the major mark ups with most flooring places. The fitters will put it down. For stairs and high traffic areas an 80:20 wool:synthetic mix is the hardest wearing. There are lots of polypropylene carpets about these days, but you have to be careful to get good ones that aren't slightly shiny or that flatten and never revive.

wowfudge · 28/04/2017 11:19

That's 80:20 carpet, not underlay!

I'll PM you his number once I've worked out how to!

We used a local firm -cheaper and just far more helpful than the bigger shops we went to. We've got cloud 9 underlay - the shop included a mid range one as standard but when we enquired about cost for the cloud 9 they said they'd just throw it in for the same cost.

We bought cloud 9 underlay online at less than 1/2 the price of carpet right - I think we got 4 rolls (15m?) fir a 4 bed house ( 4 beds, landing , stairs hall and lounge)

We bought a cheap off the roll carpet at £8.99 from carpet right and it definitely isn't the best quality , but actually looks pretty good , if a bit shiny. It only needs to last a couple of years though until we do an extension.

Also we paid a local carpet fitter - cost about £600 for the whole house. Loads cheaper than carpet right
