Upcycling boys furniture for a girl

I am swapping my children's bedrooms over. DS has large bedroom at the moment and DD has the box room. They are swapping quite happily but my son's bedroom furniture doesn't all fit into the smaller room.

He has a desk and chest of drawers which have nothing wrong with them. Is there anything quite quick and cheap I can do to give them more of a girly makeover or should I sell them and buy something else?

Ui can't possibly let your DD use the drawers with the number decals on. Everyone knows that girls must have nothing to do with numbers from a very early age in order to keep up the rate at which they drop STEM subjects.

I'm not sure that you can revamp it- it's very square and industrial. If your DD has girly tastes, then I'd just sell this and get a different one.

BeyondUser24601 · 20/03/2017 17:14

Good point, squares are a bit masculine

Girls need furniture with curvy edges, nothing sharp.
Spherical would be ideal.

Bless you. I popped on here for a bit of light relief at the end of a full on day, and you have totally come up trumps for me. I actually laughed out loud.

As soon as I seen this heading, i knew the poor op was in for a roasting... come on you lot, this is home decoration! Not AIBU

terrylene · 20/03/2017 17:56

I would paint them off-white. Dulux Timeless? Wink

starsinyourpies · 20/03/2017 18:54

Numbers AND wood, yep definitely worrying things to find in a girl's bedroom!!!

duxb · 20/03/2017 19:39

Poor OP
Perhaps her daughter doesn't like the items as they are?

Not everything has to be a gender debate . The OP didn't say "where can I find pastel pink paint and princess stickers" and if she had, would it matter?

It's ridiculous the trigger reactions of some people.

You can do amazing things with gold spray paint and fablon...

Oh for goodness sake. 🙄

OP I'd sell them if your dd is wanting something less industrial looking. You'll easily find a buyer I think.

gincamelbak · 21/03/2017 20:50

You need a mirror, make up bag and a jewellery stand. And some pictures of unicorns. And maybe a cat. Then it will be girly.

Confused It's furniture. Does it have a gender?
elephantoverthehill · 21/03/2017 20:58

Children do grow up rather quickly. Keep furniture looking like furniture, walls and carpets neutral and change the duvet covers and rugs through the Barbie/One Direction/ Harry Potter/ Man U etc phases. Your Dcs bedrooms may be one day guest rooms. I wish

MikeUniformMike · 21/03/2017 21:02

Some unicorn and fairy stickers?

BellaGoth · 21/03/2017 21:03

I must be getting old because my first thought was that if the edging is metal it could give a nasty cut if a child banged their head on it.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 24/03/2017 22:01

Op, chalk paint is really easy to use and gives a good finish even for amateurs! I would do different colours on the drawers, maybe leave one or two natural wood? And use patterned papers to cover the tags/numbers.
The sample sizes from Annie Sloan are ample to do two coats on drawers like that, can be mixed to make variations of colours, and give a really nice finish.

Not everything is a gender debate.

Brollsdolls · 27/03/2017 20:52

Ridiculous comments.

I would paint these to fit in with the style of your dd's room. They look like lovely sets of furniture, but I can see why they might not fit in if you're going for something pinky.

There are some lovely ideas on Pinterest. I quite like the drawers I've seen that are painted in dark pink / turquoise at the bottom and then lighten by a few shades as each drawer goes up.

pinkyredrose · 27/03/2017 20:57

Paint pink, add glitter, job done. Actually when I was young id much rather have had them painted blue. I'm a bit gay mind.
