Hello all,

Just about to do a spot of redecorating and I need to find a grey for my living room (north facing), hallway & stairwell (dark by the front door, much lighter up the stairs).

I have just bought four F&B testers: skimming stone, elephant's breath, peignoir and dovetail. The problem is, they aren't really grey. Dovetail is the closest to what I'd call a grey but even isn't quite right.

Please help! I want a straightforward grey; mid to light tone. I was expecting elephant's breath to be a grey with some pink in it (according to the descriptions) but it just looked a bit fudge coloured. Maybe it's the light in my hallway?

All suggestions - F&B or otherwise - really welcome. I have to decide by next week so have time to try out samples before then.

I am NOT cut out for interior design Grin

Thanks all

I was going to say F & B Cornforth White too - it's actually a really lovely soft pale grey, but I have stayed in a B&B with a room painted in Dovetail and it was gorgeous.

Thanks Luna ... maybe I won't give up on Dovetail just yet...!

Rich taupe dulux soft sheen Smile

We used dulux goose down in our kitchen. Very pleased as it's such a lovely soft grey.

GinIsMySaviour · 01/02/2017 17:59

Thank you both - two more for my tester list! Grin

Fired Earth's malm has worked well for us in our dark hall, stairs and landing.

FacelikeaBagofHammers · 01/02/2017 18:00

Cornforth White is a lovely grey.

Kiwi32 · 01/02/2017 18:07

Another vote for polished pebble! I found it warmer than goose down and lighter than chic shadow (can you tell I have also been grey obsessed...)

Have you tried the dulux app? It lets you virtually paint your walls using phone/iPad camera. It's quite good/fun!

Also it may be worth ordering testers online...I really struggled to get the grey ones in some quite big B&Qs as they're so popular just now.

Have fun!

Have a look on Pinterest at Revere Pewter by Benjamin Moore. It's a warm grey/griege. I've done my hall/stairs in it and it looks lovely.

Another vote for polished pebble! I'm really fussy and I love it 😀. It's just grey enough to be definitely grey without being overpowering - very bright hall, darker landing and a downstairs loo with no natural light and it looks fab in all of them. Cool tones.

Oh just popped up to put DD to bed and I came back to all these lovely posts. Thank you - my list of testers in growing nicely!

Kiwi an app where I can virtually paint my walls? Wow, there is no hope of me getting any work done at all tomorrow. I will obviously also have to use it to see what my dog looks like in polished pebble to Grin

I am determined not to be beaten by my general levels of confusion and to default to DH's love of magnolia.

I had Cornfirth white in a west facing loft rooom and to me it was a lilac -ey grey. I also used strong white and against white woodwork that appears a very cool grey. Also used purbeck stone which to my eyes seemed brownish! Worsted is nice greyish colour. I think it's really important to see the colour in the actual room

ArriettyClock1 · 01/02/2017 20:51

I had Conforth White in my kitchen. It was nice but very white and not grey (east facing).

In another house for work, I was bewitched by a Dulux paint - it was Goose Down. A perfect grey; it was lovely.

Waitingforsherlock · 01/02/2017 20:53

May I suggest F&B Hardwick White. It's a lovely warm grey. I have it in the living room with a stony ground ceiling. Looks great in daylight and artificial light. The room it is in is south facing though so I would buy a tester. If someone knows of the perfect grey for a north facing room, please tell me. I've been looking for one for years. I've read that Charleston Grey has only warm tones so maybe give that a try too.

We have used Dulux Just Walnut in our hall & landing. It is a soft neutral hint of grey (nothing Walnut about it) - and going by the photo looks similar to Cornforth White

F&B pavilion grey.

EatSpamAmandaLamb · 01/02/2017 21:13

Dulux Timble Case is lovely.

We found all of the f&b "greys" looked green or lilac on our walls. We had more luck with crown/dulux

IMissGin · 01/02/2017 21:15

Skimming stone is definitely stone coloured. I'm about to do a room in ammonite, started today- it's definitely a pale grey

mineallmine · 01/02/2017 21:15

Ammonite is similar to cornforth white but paler.

Burntbum · 01/02/2017 21:16

We have Dulux Goose Down in our hallway, stairs and landing. It's a lovely warm grey and looks nice against the wooden floor and white woodwork.

Nononononono33 · 01/02/2017 21:18

This is Polished Pebble, newly painted last week.

Polished pebble in our hall too.
I think it's a very neutral grey - neither blue nor pink.
