Decorating to sell - any tips?

I'm selling my house and the estate agent has recommended re-decorating and possibly dressing the house for sale. Does anyone have experience of doing this?

It's a family home that I decorated for renting - it now looks boring and tired. I can see that furniture might help but should I borrow spend money on dressing the house up?

Any suggestions about paint colours to get the best price?

Don't paint it magnolia. Some things should've stayed in the 80's. Horrid peachy colour.

Fix things that need fixing. Get boilers/electrics checked ready for buyers.
Hiring or buying funiture is pointless unless the cost of doing so increases asking price/offers enough to get your money back or more. Otherwise you are just wasting time and money.

Is there any way to know if furnishings would improve the sale? I know nothing is guaranteed but I would like to sell well.

If I went to view a house that was empty but a few items had been placed in I'd assume they were there to hide something eg stains/carpet rips/damp patches etc. Leave empty would be my preference so that the buyers can properly see the rooms.

Well, I am house hunting at the moment and some are empty, some full, some half full. None of it matters, I'm looking at the house.

Clean paintwork and windows that don't look like they need replacing is key. Paint it cream all through, sandy coloured carpets.

Id go with a neutral palate of creams and whites, but I'd take the aspect of the rooms into account. In the light warm, south, sunny rooms I'd use the cool creams and in the cooler, darker rooms I'd use warm whites.

As far as furnishing, it would be all or nothing, but furnishing can be with a light touch. Made up beds in each bedroom, dining table and chairs, and a cupboard in the dining room. Sofa, chairs, coffe table in the lounge. Friends may be able to lend you spare furniture.
All accessorised cheaply at Primark, or borrowed.
