do you have to fix wardrobes to the walls? and how?

The place I might put wardrobes has the power sockets and phone connection behind it, so I'd want to have the wardrobes slightly out from the walls (like 5cm). Would that be OK? They'd be things like IKEA Pax or John Lewis Mix-It wardrobes, probably not the really tall ones though. I could stick little wedges under the front if needed to tip them back a bit? They'd be on carpet, if that matters.

If they do need to be attached, I don't know what I'd use. I don't know what the interior walls are made of. The brief survey thing (it's a new build) said that the walls are modern concrete frame with brick cavity infill, but I don't know if that's just the exterior. One set of wardrobes would go on a wall that is totally interior to me, and the other on the wall between two flats, which isn't totally exterior either I guess. I don't know what sort of fixings I'd need to get (I would hire someone to actually do it of course, not wanting to mess anything up!).

Also, I've heard less good things about the sliding door wardrobes, as the sliding bit can go wrong. I also prefer the look of hinged doors, but I might have to go with sliding for space. How much room, realistically, would you need between wardrobe and the bed? The wardrobes are generally 60cm deep, and 50cm wide, which should mean the door is also about 50cm, so that is 1m 10cm, plus the room you need for standing and bending to get stuff in and out. I guess you can sort of stand in between the doors once they're open, so maybe 30cm of clearance is enough? It's a small room and I need to get as much storage in as possible!

Ikea wardrobes come with a little strap that attaches one end to the wall and one to the wardrobe.

Does that work if the wardrobe isn't flush against the wall? is the strap long enough to have the wardrobe a bit out?

I'd need it out by about 5cm to use the phone sockets and power points and stuff, plus there's also a little zigzag in the wall. So it wouldn't be flush against it.

And then, what do you use to attach the strap to the wall - everything I read talks about stud walls and stud finders and things before you screw things in, but (some) of my walls sound different...?
