Bouncing some Ideas for hall/stairs/landing

Ok, it seems like I actually can't make a decision on anything without consulting the great and good of mumsnet, but here goes.....

We have a large hall stairs and landing and a limited budget. It's currently yellow and is in pretty poor condition, so I'd like to repaint but we are limited by the height of the ceiling and the fact that we can't really afford a decorator so will be doing it ourselves. There's lots of coves and different areas. Ceiling is white.
I'm thinking of finding a nice wallpaper for some of the more easily accessible bits, and complementing it with white on some walls and another colour on others. The white is purely because as the ceiling is white it means that the two very high walls can be done with a roller and it won't affect the ceiling IYSWIM.

So here's my questions: is pure white just too stark? Any suggestions for some reasonably priced wall paper (ie £20 a roll not £100!)? Will having colour/white/paper look a bit odd?

I'll post some pics of the different areas!
Thanks in advance!

Hmm I think pure white might be a bit stark.

Also think that the paper/colour/white combo might be a bit confusing to the eye. Have you thought about an off white (eg dulux timeless) and jazzing up with accessories like pictures and mirrors?

I'm not a huge fan of wallpaper in hallways sorry (but I have boring taste) i prefer keeping the walls simple, that way you can update the look with accessories if you get bored rather then completely redecorate.

lovely hallway
what sort of style do you like?
Modern ,traditional?

I think a soft white would look great teamed with a pale blue patterned paper and pale blue on other walls

A pale grey white might be nice.

love this

Yoga I'm inclined to agree although the reasoning is that as these walls meet the ceiling at the fil height we need to be able to paint to the ceiling and I'm wary of it looking really messy as we don't really have the equipment (such as a platform ladder) to get up there! It is reachable from the landing and stairs with a roller on a pole, hence the need for it to be white!

I really do love grey, but it gets a bit addictive and I have already done the lounge grey and ds's bedroom will also be grey. Will it be grey overload? I have seen a beautiful grey floral paper in home base that could work with grey/white walls....

Ggirl oh that is stunning! Our hall downstairs is cream tiles so similar to that actually, and we do have 3 arches as well. Very nice. Love the duck egg too.
The house is 1950's so needs 'modern' more than traditional I think. It's quite characterful in places, very plain in others, and has been heavily extended hence all the coves, the split stair case and the different areas.

is this too traditional

Have a look on the Christmas tree thread . A poster called Pradaqueen has an all white hallway , it looks amazing .
