Would I be crazy to put a light coloured rug in the living room?

I really want to make our living room cosier, and I'm thinking about putting a large, natural coloured shaggy rug down.

We have two primary aged children. Am I insane to even consider this?

If you don't think a light coloured rug is practical, can you suggest a different colour? Our walls are pale blue, with white woodwork and we have a bamboo wooden floor which is kind of reddish brown. The chairs/sofas are shades of grey and blue. Curtains are kind of light grey-green (and pattern on them has bits of teal, pink. and light green).

We're quite restricted on budget, and I'm looking at something around 2x3m. I found affordable options in dunelm and the range between £100-£200 but am open to similar suggestions.

We have exactly this. It needs cleaned every so often and will need replacing in a few years but it works.

sqidsin yes I had spotted that, only they don't do one big enough. (I specifically want it to go under the front of the sofas.)

museumum how do you clean it? And how many years do you reckon you'll have out of it altogether?

We use the stuff you brush in and Hoover off. Can't remember what it's called.
We bought ours when ds was born, he's now 3. I reckon it would be nice to replace it in another 2 yrs or so.

Ok, I'm going to brave it and go for a non-shaggy but natural colour rug. I'm a bit sneezy about dust so decided shaggy might not be the best plan!

Different rooms have different rug shape and size requirements. More than providing cushioning and warmth they provide the aesthetic value for your room. Designers usually recommend starting designing with area rug, thus the color of the walls , throw pillows, paintings can be chosen.
For the pale blue I would suggest classic milky shades or crisp dark blue. Just have slight variations in the tone and a patchwork rug.
