Help me decide on a colour

It's a room in an old cottage, about 200 years old. Beams and inglenook fireplace but has a very large window added so is not dark. I've tried a pale greenish colour but I don't like it at all. I think I want something more dramatic, like a country club type feel. Maybe ochre or maroony? I've attached a picture of the stone inglenook surround. Can't add a pic of the room, it's an absolute tip!
Any suggestions?

In the end I settled on a lightish rusty red colour - it kind of blended with the fireplace and suited the age of the house. Am trying to find a pic to show you....

Fab inglenook! Might be too pastel-y for you but we've got Little Greene Julia's Dream next to exposed walls in our living room. It's a pinky-beige so not bold but no t what you'd expect and it gets a lot of compliments!

I had a really deep burgundy next to my exposed brick fireplace in my last house, it looked fantastic. I mixed the colour up myself, with a maroon matt paint and matt black added in stages.

Right, I've discovered the dulux app which lets you try the colour on your walls, so have tried a few. These are the ones that look most like what I think I'm after...

All 3 go well with the fire so I think it depend what will complement the floor/ furniture best!

I think it is going to depend on the furniture/soft furnishings. I lived with a dark red drawing room/study and a darker teal lounge for a good few years. They both looked wonderful at night...and seemed to be fine on grey cloudy days too. They have been greige for the last 8 years.

For me, the moss colour would look a bit too musty if you have a lot of foliage/window boxes outside.

I am going through a "dark blue" obsession at the moment. I think this is going to scare DH a bit (and be a pain to paint over if I hate it) so I am compromising by painting the alcoves dark initially (and possibly the window wall...which is mostly windows) and teaming it with some coordinating wallpaper for the chimney breast.

That's a great app...I'll have to take a look at that for my next project.

The floor is a greigey carpet, very neutral.
Furniture wise, I'll be getting some stuff to go with the room really! It's my study/craft space so I've got a sewing table and shelves at the moment and will probably get a couple of armchairs by the fire.
I really like the moss green colour but we have a lot of green around the house, I think I should be a bit more adventurous. I'd really like to find a gold/mustard colour but have never come across one that is rich enough, they always seem to end up quite light.

OP I once used a Crown Period colour in a mustard tone. I thought it would look lovely but it literally looked as if I'd smeared Colmans Mustard on the walls - so it was definitely 'rich' enough . I kept it for about a week...

But maybe have a look at that if that's your thing?

The deep teal looks lovely, would fit with your carpet & work well with pretty much any wood furniture too. Personally I would add a bit of leopard or zebra print & black leather,

I think it's Dulux that do Cherished Gold that's a deep gold colour and Farrow and Ball do a gold I think it's called Babushka or something like that. Crown do Imperial Gold and there's one called Tapestry Thread I think that's Crown. I think it would look lovely with your fireplace, Persian rugs etc it's a warm cosy colour. I like the deep red too.

Sorry just checked it's not Babushka (it's Babouche) it's India Yellow. Sudbury Yellow is nice and so is Cats Paw which is a bit more subtle.
