DFS Zinc Sofa

I really love this sofa from DFS French Connection range. I love it in black leather ( the navy leather is nice too) but am worried that it will date really quickly?
I can't figure out how to link to it but it's got quite a 70's look to it. Very trendy right now but might look outdated in a couple of years? Should I play it safe and get something a bit more boring?

I know this is an old thread, but wondered if the Zinc sofa owners (especially with sofas in the teal fabric) are still happy with their sofas? I’d love to hear how well the sofas have stood up to regular use.

Thank you!

We have had ours fabric one a couple of years now and it has stood up really well to our cat trying to use it as a scratching post. I've never really found it to be that comfy though tbh. The thick foam seat cushions seem to tip a bit under weight and the seat base is just a little too wide to sit on comfortably without a lot of extra cushions behind my back.

Also, the seat cushions slide really easily and I find myself pushing them back into place almost every day.

I really like the look of it and it goes well with a mix of mid-century style furniture. The angled sides give me grey hairs whenever we have a full house as some people will always perch their bums on the armrests which don't look like they will take any weight. I know you aren't supposed to sit on armrests but people always do

@SunnyAgain did you order the Zinc sofas? I am having kittens! We have a John Lewis one at the moment - it's new but being returned due to them messing us about so badly (the sofa bed we ordered never turned up and was apparently never made despite ordering it in August and now the fabrics out of stock so would have to wait until end of Feb next year for it!) BUT I'm wondering whether I've been a bit hasty and I should just wait for it instead of going for DFS ones. The quality doesn't sound all that great?!

Leafy2018 · 17/11/2019 19:32

I've put deposit down on DFS sofas but the order's on hold at the moment due to me wondering what to do!

@cinnabunbun good to hear that your sofa has stood up to your cats, as that’s a concern here too! Do you have the teal fabric, and did you get the protection treatment? Interesting to hear about the seat cushions. I specifically had this sofa on my shortlist as I want one that isn’t too deep, and this seemed to fit the bill. I think I’ll have to go and have a(nother) look in the showroom. I think someone on a different Mumsnet thread mentioned buying non-slip matting to go underneath the seat cushions to stop the slipping for this sofa, which I could do, though it seems strange to potentially buy a sofa knowing from the outset that I might have to take corrective measures.

@Leafy2018 I am still undecided! I have ordered swatches from DFS to add to my huge collection from various other sofa companies (including John Lewis) but want to go and look at a couple of other ones still before hopefully making a choice. Which JL sofa bed have you had the issues with?

Leafy2018 · 17/11/2019 22:58

@SunnyAgain I had ordered the Bailey sofa bed and we have the grand version here. I feel really torn. The DFS zinc sofas aren't actually cheap (I think they are more with stain protection) and I have read quite a few things about them going bobbly or stitching coming undone. But plenty of positive reviews too! Argh...!

@Leafy2018 I went to look at a few more sofas on my way home from work... M&S (Fosbury sofa) - liked the design, comfy, liked the fabric choice, but both seat and back cushions aren’t upholstered all the way round, they have a panel of nasty polyester type material on the back, so you could never turn them over. Thought that was a corner-cutting cost-saving exercise but would rather pay more for the extra fabric to have the cushions fully covered.
Next (Wilson sofa) - fully covered cushions, liked sofa design, comfy but don’t like any of the fabric choices. Another Next one (Farringdon), even if I had liked the fabrics, was too deep for us.

On the way home I actually felt sick at the thought of never finding my perfect sofa. I’m wondering whether to just go for the DFS one as I can find least fault with it! Or ask around and see if I can find a local place that builds sofas from scratch so I can get exactly what I have in mind, but I suspect that will be too expensive. I think I am going to have a week off sofa hunting as I’m finding it all exhausting! I still have JL to visit at some point (quite like the Barbican and Arlo designs) but can’t face yet another trip just now.

Hope you come to a decision. The DFS one seems to have plenty of positive online comments, as you say. When I ordered the swatch the salesman said it was one of their top 3 (I think) bestsellers. I think it was one of the first I liked when I started looking and I would probably be much happier if I had just ordered it and not looked elsewhere!

We have two Zincs in teal. Had them about 2 years as our main sofas and no bobbling at all. I would say though that the scatter cushions (triangle pattern fabric) did go a bit bobbly quite quickly. This didn't really matter to me as I was changing them anyway (for mustard - looks fab with the teal!) but I'd have been annoyed if I had shelled out for the footstool in the triangle print.

SunnyAgain · 15/12/2019 22:48

Thank you @GreatSoprendo, I’ve only just seen your reply! Still undecided, but I’ve decided to have a break from sofa-hunting for a few weeks as it was becoming all-consuming!

Hi there, I realise this is an old thread, but I am thinking about getting this sofa. I wondered if you went for the memory foam cushions or not and how they’ve stood the test of time?! Thanks for any help!

Hangingbasketofdoom · 30/08/2020 15:03

I have one, it hasn't bobbled (about three years). Memory foam wasn't an option I don't think. I would purchase again, it's really comfortable.

Hi, We went for memory foam cushions. We’ve have had our sofa about 7 months now, and it still looks as it did when it was first delivered. I turn the cushions about every 2-3 weeks. I do find the seats quite firm, but understand that the memory foam means the cushions will keep their shape better in the long term, and will soften gradually over time. It’s a great looking sofa and I love the way you can sit into the corner of the sofa, leaning against the arm and back.

Incidentally we’ve had no problem at all with the seat cushions slipping forward which some people had previously reported, so I wonder if there has been a minor design change to overcome this issue.
