Anyone had an Ercol sofa (contemporary style)

I'm looking at the Novara and Cosenza sofas. Going to look at Novara hopefully tomorrow. Anyone had any experience of Ercol sofa's? I know that their wooden furniture is well regarded, so hopefully the sofa's will live up to that reputation. My last one was from M&S and I wasn't impressed

We have a Cosenza sofa. I like it a lot. However we do feel the seat cushions have been quick to lose a bit of shape. Have some regrets over not going for a similar style that DFS had!

HeirOfNothingInParticular · 14/05/2016 07:08

Thanks GruffaloPants. That's disappointing. The seats lost their shape on my M&S sofa and had to be replaced, so was hoping Ercol would be better. I think I know the DFS sofa you mean, but think the Cosenza is nicer. Off to have a look once the shops open!

That sofa looks lovely. My parents have an ercol but 20yrs old, has held up really well
except for the fabric fading which would happen regardless.
John Lewis have a similar one by G plan too - is it maybe more down to the material used to fill it though than the quality?

HeirOfNothingInParticular · 14/05/2016 11:02

Thank you TheSteveMilliband. I'm going to pop into John Lewis and have a look. G Plan used to do another range called Ethos, which a bit more modern than their usual stuff, but I faffed around and by the time I had made up my mind they had discontinued it.

I love the mid century style - not fashionable when parents got theirs but really like the consenza and g plan. Am envious, one of these days will get rid of our boxy dark leather sofa and get something lovely like that Wink

HeirOfNothingInParticular · 14/05/2016 11:56

No, it wasn't fashionable when my parents had it back in the day either! I remember them in black leatherette, with orange fabric seats!

I am going to go and look at Consenza soon, it's bit of a trek to the store that has it on display, but I don't want to risk without trying. I did look at the Navara this morning, but it's not really what I'm after. It looked nice enough though and was comfy

Black and orange sounds......striking. Navarro looks a little like the john Lewis ikon range - I tried them in the shop and they are really comfy, but not practical with kids who spill things (cream). The Cosenza looks a bit like john Lewis Barbican - very retro but lovely. I suspect the ercol is a bit comfier and a bit better quality but the Barbican probably holds it shape very well and is very comfortable (not as much as ikon, but then I think ikon needs fluffed up often).
Ooh, you must update with what you've gone for!

We recently bought the Cosenza corner unit. It is perfect except that it is supported by 6 black stumpy plastic legs under the corner unit that are not shown in the brochure or on line adverts. Ercol are not being honest in how their product will look. We are disappointed that we feel mislead by the adverts. Ercol will not replace them with wood which is what the other legs are made from : beware!

Ercol have proved a disappointment recently. I phoned them with a query about dimensions of a sofa that I had bought for my son and was given bad information which has needlessly cost me a lost deposit, Ercol denied any error on their part. I foolishly also bought two Nevara grand sofas for my own house and frankly find them uncomfortable... the seat cushion is too thin and I can feel the wooden frame and curvature of the seat through them . My previous sofa is an ugly brown leather thing from M&S and I have kept it because it is at least comfortable.

Sept 2017.. Ordered 2 Ercol sofas from Furniture Village. Delivered 5th December. Found that the back cushions sagged and the seat felt flat and uncomfortable (like sitting on a clapped out old sofa). Complained (by letter) to F.V. on 17th Dec, saying we didn't feel they were of satisfactory quality and mention the Consumer Rights Act and asking for the sofas to be collected and a refund issued.. F.V. insisted that an independent Inspector look at the sofas, which one did 2 weeks later. His report stated that there was nothing amiss with the suite and that it was the 'flat' design of the cushions and low base. We are elderly and sitting on these sofas was tantamount to sitting on the floor. F.V. said there was nothing they could do and Ercol when contacted also wouldn't help. So, we paid another £300 (on top of the £2500 sofa cost) for an upholsterer to put in hard foam in the seat cushions.. Now just waiting for time to pass, so we can justify to ourselves the purchase of another suite.. It will NOT be Ercol..

I ordered a large Novara settee and chair from Furniture Village right at the end of October last year. When it arrived in January, the back cushions for the settee were the wrong size ( they were for the smaller medium settee) and the seat cushion for the chair was covered in the wrong fabric. When I went to attach the front oak rail & feet to the settee, I heard a 'KLUNK' noise from within the settee as I carefully turned it over. It turned out that one of the ferrules, for securing the front rail and feet, had dropped out of the frame so that one of the 5 securing bolts could not be fitted. Also, the sprung base, below the seat cushions on the settee, was an issue. The springs on one side of the settee were hitting the stretcher rail every time someone sat on the settee...which made an annoying 'knocking' noise.
The Assistant Manager came out to have a look, quoting that it was a "Friday" settee. At first he was talking about having the cushions and covers replaced and the ferrule reinstated. However, a new settee and chair were reordered, and I was to keep and use the existing ones until the replacements arrived.
I took delivery of the replacement settee and chair in June. There were several flaws in the material....mainly on the 2 settee back-cushions. Also, the springs on the setteee were now hitting the stretcher rails at both sides of the settee.
I reported the faults to Furniture Village, and a chap from FIRA (Independent Furniture Care & Repair) came out to inspect the furniture and compile a report for all party's. He cited the mounting of the springs directly over the stretcher rails as a FAIL.....and said that the springs should clear the stretcher rails. In his report, he has stated that the items can be repaired with replacement cushion covers and by moving the springs to clear the stretcher rails.
I have rejected the product, and the repair. Chances are, the replacement covers would NOT be from the same batch of material, and as for moving the springs, this is something that should be addressed in the factory during manufacture.
Furniture Village will NOT reorder the settee, because the same FAULT with the springs will still be there, and ERCOL will not change their manufacturing process to eliminate this DOCUMENTED FAULT.
So, after 10 and a half months, ERCOL are arranging with Furniture Village to have the items collected and for a full refund to be given.

In short, uncomfortable and worn very badly in only a year. Extremely disappointed

We bought two Ercol Adrano settees last year and within weeks the seat and back cushions were looking saggy. My husband said he felt as though he was sitting on the floor, so Stokers sent out a technician who said there was nothing wrong. I complained again and another technician came and agreed the seat cushion should be changed, which it was. My husband was still almost sitting on the floor and by this time the cushions were looking really scruffy, so I complained to Ercol who passed it back to Stokers and another technician came out again saying nothing was wrong and had the gall to tell me that cushions needed plumping up!!! (I have been following Ercol's plumping and turning instructions, but who doesn't plump up cushions anyway!!!!!!)
The upshot is that we are stuck with something which cost thousands, which we don't enjoy and is actually very uncomfortable- my husband ends up leaning forward on his knees and I get backache. We will NEVER buy Ercol settees again.

I've bought 2 Erocl adrano sofas and the cushions on the one j sit on ars flat. Ercol replaced them and after 2 weeks they are worse than before. They are sending £50 to replace them. One costs more than £80. Also if we use our own foam the guarantee is invalid. Will NEVER buy Ercol again.

Sianlewis02 · 14/08/2020 13:09

Hi
How didn’t this end up being sorted, I have the same sofa and exactly the same issues so disappointed also did you have any cover with them like stain guard?

janes · 13/04/2021 14:07

Don't buy an Ercol sofa. Biggest mistake we ever made. We previously had 2 Alston sofas which were extremely comfortable. Unfortunately they had to be replaced as they didn't fit our new house. We really liked the look of the Ercol sofa and thought we would treat ourselves. We have wasted good money. The sofas took twice the length of time to arrive as originally quoted. On arrival it was very obvious that the one sofa had very poor quality sofa cushions. We complained to our retailer, Arthur Llewellyn Jenkins. They contacted Ercol who agreed the wrong foam had been used. We have waited 14 weeks for replacement cushions. During that time the sofa was too uncomfortable to sit on. Also during that time the other sofa cushions have settled & now that soda is uncomfortable. We are now going to have to buy better quality cushions costing £500. Really not happy & go only recommend you don't buy Ercol.

New Ercol isn't even elm anymore. I know some of the John Lewis stuff is also made in Asia.

There is a large FB group for Ercol, lots for sale. Would you consider buying used and re-upholstering?

I am a huge Ercol fan and have a few classic pieces, all bought second hand very recently. It would never occur to me to buy something brand new made by Ercol.

Hi has anyone purchased an Ercol Forli Sofa please. Thinking of buying one but all I can find are bad reviews! Thanks Scarlett
