Nasty old pine chairs...can I do anything with them?

I am thinking of painting them grey sort of shabby chic style?
Is annie Sloan the best paint? So I need to use primer or sand them?
I have 4 to do and have never done anything like it before....am nervous!!!

I'd use satin paint, then sand them and then use dark furniture wax.

I recently did this with a picnic bench and it looks lovely.

I painted mine with garden furniture paint and they have worked really well (cuprinol garden colours). It's smoother than annie sloan and so gives a more polished look. Cheaper too.

Pintrest is awesome for ideas, btw.

I really like the shabby chic distressed look and ideally would be grey and cream on top of that makes sense?

Hi Op you dont have to undercoat/sand etc with Annie Sloan but I wouldn't recommend it for chairs, as I find it not particularly harrdwearing & it is quite tricky to get the consistency/coverage right if you are not very experienced.
With pine you probably wouldn't need to sand first, unless it is varnished just use a undercoat & combined primer as your base coat, then you could do one coat of grey, once dried do your top coat of white, then sand back lightly on parts that you want distressed, then lightly wax to seal.
As Joffrey pp satin or eggshell is easy to use & gives a harrdwearing finish.
