Inventive ideas needed for my oak furniture

I have a large dining table, chairs and sideboard in light, new oak. This sort of thing
I really don't like them much but can't afford to replace them.
The choices I've come up with so far are

  1. strip / sand and wax with a darker tinted wax
  2. do them like those shabby chic ones you see everywhere with a stripped top and painted legs - not keen on this look
  3. paint in some sort of bright / very dark colour - this would, I think, be hard work and might look shite Are there any other amazing ideas I've not thought of? They are good quality but just not my sort of thing We're about to repaint the room, which is sort of 'classic' with a cast iron fireplace, stripped floors, picture rail etc but I'm a bit over that Laura Ashley look which it lends itself well towards

Your link hasn't worked - could you try again?

Whoops. Sort of like this, not just the same but similar

You could prime and paint the carcasses, leaving the doors and drawer fronts as they are or painting them a different colour or using a darker wax. Or reverse that and only paint the doors and drawer fronts. Sand the carcasses and wax with darker wax or use Colron wood dye and wax over that.

Satinwood paint (the water based type) gives a good, durable finish and you could apply with a gloss roller if you don't like to see any brush marks. Beware using a gloss roller if it's non-drip quick drying satinwood though. Two coats with a brush work better. This gives a non shabby chic look - I am not a fan of that look either.

We've got some pine bedroom furniture and I've given it a new lease of life with toasted almond satinwood paint for the carcasses and stripping then lime waxing the drawer fronts and knobs.

Thanks wowfudge. I'll think on. I might look at flogging on eBay and replacing. I've got a whole house to decorate and I'm not sure I'm ready to take on the furniture just yet

Debating about making them slightly more contemporary. Dulux rich black emulsion, decorators varnish and some new knobs.
Easy and cheap

How about? Sorry not debating!!

Buy satinwood paint and save yourself the varnishing.
