Moving home soon, ds1s room is a shock of pink and I'm struggling to see past it. Looking on Pinterest but not finding much I like, it's all either sludgy or plain.
How have you decorated your boys room or how would you decorate a 5 year old boys room?

Here is his room. It's got built in wardrobes just out of sight but apart from that we are having to buy all new

I have seen some amazing planets wall art/space background wallpaper on decorating shows. Would he like that? You only need to change that back wallpaper, the light and the rug then.
Mine loves his ikea road play mat!

We have used big dot wall stickers on one wall. Another is freed up for posters of whichever programme/toy/superhero is in favour at the moment. There is a neutral paint colour on the walls and a wooden blind on the window matching the wooden furniture.

We have kept the room fairly plain (no fancy furniture or lampshades) because the many toys and books add enough colour and interest (i.e. clutter) by themselves. The duvet covers we got in Ikea.

So I would suggest a really simple background of pale walls (grey, deep cream, sage green etc). Add wall stickers, colourful bed linen and a couple of posters and shelves of toys. That will probably be enough.

My 9 year old has just redecorated his room, and chose Crown Old Gold silk emulsion, with a pierced metal lampshade. His curtains are a sort of new england seaside theme with blues, golds, seashells etc.

He chose it all and loves it.

DS2's room has a subtle star wars theme. Its mainly white with one navy wall. Some large classic star wars canvases which can be easily changed when he gets fed up with them, light blue curtains with white black out blinds and vintage star wars bedding (the result of much hunting on eBay). I have turned an old R2D2 T-shirt into a cushion for his chair and there are glow in the dark space stickers all over his ceiling.

He loves it and it will be very easy to change as he grows up. We bought second hand mahogany furniture (again from eBay) and a double bed and so that shouldn't need changing either. We bought a dressing table to use as a desk and there is masses of storage in the storage divan and an ottoman at the end of the bed.

We also updated the sockets at the same time, replacing standard sockets with new ones with USB ports.

We've done white walls with red and navy and stars for our 6 year old DS. He's got some old style Avengers and Star Wars posters up too.

Have you looked on gltc.co.uk at all?

We moved house a few year ago and DS1 (four at the time)'s room was pink too - hot pink walls. He actually rather liked the hot pink but it was minging with cigarette burns on the carpet, teenage scrawling on the walls etc.

So we went for pale blue painted walls (First Dawn from Dulux I think), with two walls in the niches next to the chimney papered with wallpaper with little red and blue cars on it. Red and blue spaceships on the light shade. Blue carpet. Red and blue gingham bunting above the bunkbed. A dark blue beanbag that my sister made. A transfer of a racetrack with cars on it along one wall. Framed covers of Ladybird books on the walls. He's seven now and shares with his five year old brother and it's still OK. It was my favourite room to decorate!

Thanks for the ideas! Those websites are great, I've seen a few things I like on there. I like the idea of a feature wall along the long wall and keeping the others light. I quite like the dotty wall!
Think I'm just worried about doing anything too childish as I'm guessing he's going to change tastes a fair bit over the next few years and I'd like to get some good wear out of it.

Thanks for your help.

DS is 6 and we're moving this month so I've planned his new room. The walls will be white ( not sure on the shade but I want a nice, crisp looking finish) with the part of the wall where the chimney runs through being painted a bright red. The furniture will be black with red accessories and the carpet will be red too. DS rides a motorbike so there will be a large black silhouette style wall sticker of a motorbike/ rider on the red wall and red one on the wall by his bed. On the back walk will be ds's Liverpool scarf and old football shirts with 1-5 (one for each year of his life) displayed. Ds's motorbike is red and obviously Liverpool fc is red so it seems like the obvious colour but I think the white will set it off nicely and make it look fresh and modern.

I'm doing my ds's room next year with this paper on one wall and that hemnes bed you have in grey, and the drawers in the blue. I hope it will just grow with him he loves all things transport and I can baby it up with he's toys and pillows now (he will be 4) but I think it's quite cool so hopefully wont be outgrown quickly because I hate decorating.
