What era would you say this textured beauty is from? Pink with blue splashes. In a bedroom cupboard.

I think I had very similar in my bedroom as a kid - anaglypta in pink/white/pastel blue random pattern. I'd say 1983/4.

AugustRose · 26/08/2015 22:50

I was just thinking that wow not I've got that stupid advert in my head

EllyGee85 · 26/08/2015 23:16

Ha I'm definitely not trying to find matching rolls Grin

I was actually wondering when my fitted wardrobe was put in and thought the paper that was left inside would have been a clue. But then got quite interested looking up different wallpaper fashions from over the years. It's staying on the wardrobe walls as an homage to the era ;-)

I'm trying to talk DH out of redecorating the inside of the cupboard under the stairs. The wallpaper is 60s.

EllyGee85 · 26/08/2015 23:37

Oh yes, that definitely needs to stay there Pipbin! Our cupboards need to be museums of past interior design. Especially if the rest of your house is anything like mine and painted in an array of varying shades of greige. Very 2010s Confused

Do your built in wardrobes have those slatted doors? Those are definitely a late 80's / early 90's phenomena.

EllyGee85 · 27/08/2015 21:52

No they're fake wood veneer with a indented border around each door. Not particularly attractive but useful storage so I think I'm going to attempt to paint rather than rip out. Can veneer stuff be painted??

Our attic conversion went up in 1979 - our bedroom has a cream painted version of the same nasty stuff. Ds (2.5 yrs) is obsessed by it! Peeled a bit off and luckily its hiding perfect u touched plaster. Why previous owners, why would you put it up unless you had something to hide!?!?

RomComPhooey · 27/08/2015 23:03

Nearly as bad as wood chip.

Wood chip is ten times worse to strip. Every time I've had to strip wood chip, I've ended up with the wood splinters embedded under my finger nails in the direction of my nail beds. Argh! That stuff hurts.

EllyGee85 · 27/08/2015 23:13

Ahh so is there a possibility the wallpaper is from the late 70s then? Or does the pastel hue definitely suggest 80s?

Nicest Smile - That tulip paper is nice! I wish the cowboys who'd renovated my place had used it. Instead, they used bastarding woodchip, everywhere, including the really high ceilings. I'd happily use the pressed paper designs once I get the BastardWoodchip (TM) off.

But, OP, you can keep whatever that is!

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 28/08/2015 19:19

Thank you, Wizzard Smile

I still love it - it was hard work getting hold of it, I can't remember if it was discontinued or special order only or what, but I was thrilled when I got it. It's only below the dado rail, so was dead easy to hang.

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 28/08/2015 19:22

Agree that bastard woodchip is a bastard but as I chose to put it up elsewhere in the house I can't blame anybody

I can recommend hiring a steam stripper for getting it off (though you might need a wetsuit or something to do the ceilings Hmm)

derektheladyhamster · 28/08/2015 19:24

I'm going mid 90's no I didn't cover the awful walls in my first flat with it

CremeEggThief · 28/08/2015 19:25

My Housing Association house has blown vinyl and textured paper all over it. The shocking thing is it looks as if it's been done recently.SadShock

WankerDeAsalWipe · 28/08/2015 19:28

Could be earlier 80s too - I moved into my own flat in 1984 and I'm sure that was in my parents house while I still lived there.

EllyGee85 · 28/08/2015 20:08

Oh really Wanker? That particular pattern or another blown vinyl design?

OP posts:
Timeturner · 28/08/2015 20:18

I have blown vinyl in my living room, whch I out up in April. Its a faint pinstripe, painted, and meant I didnt have to have all my walls replastered to paint them. Looks fab!

WankerDeAsalWipe · 28/08/2015 20:24

It's hard to pinpoint. We definitely had something very similar to that at some point whether it was before I moved out or not i can't be certain. We moved into that house in 1980, i moved out in 84 and mum and Dad moved out about 1992. My Dad certainly celebrated his 60th in March 93 and they were in their next house by then and I remember it being summer when they moved, so it would be 91 or 92.

They had proper Anaglypta hung by my Uncle (a Painter and Decorator) in the Livingroom when they first moved in and that was painted and repainted over the years.

If i remember correctly, that paper was in the back bedroom and my niece picked at it from her cot as a toddler when she lived there for a while. That would have been 86 or 87 as she was born in 85. they had a similar blown vinyl in the hall but it was more beige and green and the one in the bedroom was more pinky/lilacy. The one in the hall was pretty much destroyed by the dog who had a penchant for chewing it at exposed corners :o

But I think the blown vinyl era did last a fair while.

Why do you need to pinpoint it so accurately?

Sheddie · 28/08/2015 20:31

I am a wallpaper buyer for a large well known retailer and we have the green version of this in our range still today! Not sure exactly how long it has been in the range but it must have been 10-15 years I would say. The supplier is Graham and Brown.

80sMum · 28/08/2015 20:33

If I was placing a bet on it I would say 1984.

ouryve · 28/08/2015 20:40

The good thing with that sort of blown vinyl is that it tends to come off in one piece - unless someone's glued the edges down with something tougher than wallpaper paste, that is.

And a small anaglypta pattern can be lovely and takes paint really well. Some of the Supaglypta designs were way OTT, though. I had to strip a lot of that stuff off in the last house I owned. The previous owners had the entire house emulsioned every summer so it was like stripping off tree bark.

WizzardHat · 30/08/2015 08:50

I actually bought a steam stripper, since there was so much of it. The first died of overwork, poor thing, but the second still works and I've done the bedroom and teh hall so far. I need to gather my courage for the kitchen and living room - the kitten ate some of the paper in the living room and somehow managed to chew a pretty decent map of the UK including Ireland. Clever cat! She got Cornwall on the wrong side but still. So I peeled up a bit more and found some kind of textured paper under it, and no doubt at least one layer of Victorian paper underneath that. If I thought the walls under all of that lot would be good enough to paint, I'd try, but the thought of all that work and then the 600 or so for a plasterer...

LIZS · 30/08/2015 08:56

Ooh pils have similar to that in lounge. I'd agree around 1990. They've recently painted over it leaving the texture!
