So, if you had over a £1000 of John Lewis vouchers.......

What would you spend them on?
Recently got married, no poem, no requests in with the invites but if anyone asked what we would like for a gift we said John Lewis vouchers. We are amazed & immensely grateful to have received over a £1000.

We badly need a new stair carpet. Our mattress has seen better days but these seem too practical almost, I'm leaning towards some new light fittings or we could do new TV, nice coffee machine ect.

So give me some ideas please, what would you buy?

Oooh, I'd buy something nicely designed like a light fitting or a coffee machine, like you say. Or some picture frames for the house, a mirror, some nice fabric for a blind or cushions. I'd too steer away from practical things like carpet and mattress - JL are bound to be more expensive than elsewhere and once they're in place you won't appreciate the expense as much. Just my opinion though!

Thank you, your thinking is exactly the same as mine! Something we can look at & appreciate as something special! Thank you

i have my eye on a JL bed that over 1000 but i imagine it's so lovely. def something like a mattress you spend alot of time in bed

BikeRunSki · 21/05/2015 19:54

Carpet
Bed Linen

Things like tvs/fridges are a good idea to buy from jl as you will often get longer warranty and they will pricematch.
Furtniture and carpet harder to pricematch and they only have the posher stuff in the first place.
They have good kitchen stuff and bed linen, I would look at that after the "big" electricals.

Oh I'm glad you posted this. I have £500 of JL vouchers and no idea what to spend them on so might pinch some of the ideas! Otherwise I'll end up spending them on school uniform which is pretty boring.

summerlovingliz · 21/05/2015 20:06

We had John Lewis vouchers too and decided on an amazing duvet and pillows.. Totalling around £500 but heaven getting into bed every night

6 weeks ago I would have said MacBook...

A set of good cutlery.
Nice glass ware.
Two or three settings of a dinner service.
Limited edition numbered print.

ouryve · 21/05/2015 21:07

A nice piece of furniture.

Though last time I had a load of JL vouchers - £300 - I put them towards a new mattress, funnily enough!

Elizabethreallyismissing · 22/05/2015 12:38

Some good ideas thanks, cutlery is a good one, we don't have 6 that match when our friends come round! Smile

I wouldn't use it for carpets unless you really don't need anything else. I would use them for something that you will get great use out of for many years that won't get left behind if you move, and won't go out of fashion. For example put it towards a really good bed, if you need a decent bed.

Or buy some top quality kitchen equipment that will stand the test of time and hopefully stay with you for many years, if not forever, like top notch saucepans, a Nespresso coffee machine, that sort of thing.

ItsNotAsPerfectAsItSeems · 22/05/2015 12:44

Something like cutlery or a nice classy dinner set will stay with you potentially for 20yrs+. Won't it be nice in 15 yrs time to look at them and remember your wedding? Although a good quality mattress and bedding is a very worthwhile investment and used to be quite common wedding gifts.

ItsRainingInBaltimore · 22/05/2015 12:44

Or beautiful quality pillows, blankets, a quilt, Egyptian cotton high thread count bedding that will last you years and be like sleeping on a cloud.

I notice that JL have a bank holiday sale on at the moment (think the main sales start at the end of June these days...it seems to get earlier every year).

I think you definitely need a few key things to show off. A beautiful vase/nice serving dishes/mirror/photo frames. The sort of thing you can point to when people visit. If you have a garden/patio, how about some planters or window boxes. You can't really do that with a mattress!

Re the stair carpet, would a few runners help disguise the worst bits? John Lewis sell quite a few. They even sell wallpaper and paint (I think you could probably justify spending £100 to smarten up a room).

Happy shopping!
