Apart from the obvious - ikea for e.g. - where are people getting good inexpensive furniture these days?

Unless you are wanting new furniture, then local auctions are a good place to buy inexpensive furniture.

Newhere2 · 26/04/2015 16:40

Faded where do you find out able local auctions? (sorry if thats a silly question!)

Lagoonablue · 26/04/2015 19:36

Homebase online. Seriously, there is some nice stuff.

Mintyy · 26/04/2015 19:38

I would always buy second hand for seriously inexpensive.

Selks · 26/04/2015 19:40

Ebay

Next furniture can be ok, my sofas are from there and they're great.

Faded, I wondered about auctions and house clearances, but also not sure how to find out where the best places to go are. There are a couple of auction houses round my way but all seem to be expensive. We have bought from house clearance places on the past but all seem to have closed. Any tips on finding good places or is it all about eBay/gumtree now?

I will check next and homebase thanks.

Local Facebook selling group? You can view and haggle price if need be

We got a nice cheap sofa from Made.com, I am pleased with it.

And an ok cheap sofa from Asda, who also have some actual real wood furniture pretty cheap.

I think it depends on your house: our last house was a big Victorian one, and we got most of our furniture second hand/antique/junk really cheaply as it was mostly too big or dark for modern homes.

Our new house is a little cottage and needs much smaller proportions, so cheap modern is better.

eBay. You can get online quotes for couriers to go an pick it up for you. I bought a lovely big dining table and 6 chairs for £200 last year, and it was about £30 delivery. Great big farmhouse style thing. I'm looking for kids wardrobes at the moment.

I used this website after a friend recommended www.highcountryfurniture.co.uk and got some lovely stuff for my bedroom, much cheaper than I could find anywhere else online. Was a bit apprehensive as I'd never heard of them and seemed a bit too good to be true but the stuff turned up on both orders so must be legit Grin

Otherwise ikea especially for kids room stuff.

Use 'auction houses (name of town)' as a search term. Most auction firms will have monthly auctions with online catalogue available about a week before the auction date. The catalogues usually have brief description, often with a photo and a guide price. They will charge a buyers fee (15-20%+VAT on the hammer price). You are best to go to the viewing day, usually the day before the auction or on the day, go in plenty of time to view the actual piece you are interested in as you have no come back unless there is a real issue with the goods. Auctions are great fun and can be an interesting way to spend a few hours on a rainy day. Most will have a café that sells amazing cake, at least the ones around here do. You can bid at the sale, or by phone or on the internet, or leave a commission bid. I've visited a few locally and always found the staff very friendly and helpful. If your bid is successful you have to pay and collect within a few days, or they will charge you storage. I imagine prices vary greatly across the country, certainly watching programmes like Bargain Hunt/Flog gives that impression.

ReallyBad (love the name!) what Made.com sofa did you go for? I bought a sideboard from there and am very impressed

fieldfare · 27/04/2015 09:09

Antique stores, gumtree, preloved, Facebook selling sites.
We recently bought a little antique console table for the lounge for £50 plus the cost of collecting it from someone on gumtree. Looked online and found the guide price was £700!

I got the Anya 2 seater in Mineral: it's cotton covered and feels good quality.
