Silver kitchen appliances - a bit 1990s?

We need to replace our fridge/freezer and dishwasher. My husband wants to replace them with the same silver colour. I don't like them but can't put my finger on why. Kitchen is dark brown and grey.

Yes I agree they look dated. I had a silver fridge and washing machine. When they broke they were both replaced with white.

Hadron21 · 21/04/2015 09:59

Thats what I think too. Thanks for replying.

It was surprising how much it updated the kitchen actually. The white just looked more 2010's and less 2000's.

What do you mean by silver? Stainless steel? Stainless stain is popular in the U.S. it seem.

blueberrypie0112 · 22/04/2015 01:09

In fact, white appliances is slightly outdated but it depends on the design of the kitchen.

ggirl · 22/04/2015 01:11

Im fed up of stainless steel look , I reckon we'll be getting more white / coloured appliances soon

blueberrypie0112 · 22/04/2015 01:29

I love 1950's appliances....like red stove

The 1970's harvest gold. Bleh...at least for now.

blueberrypie0112 · 22/04/2015 01:43

To give you idea what I mean by harvest gold: retrorenovation.com/2014/02/21/harvest-gold-kitchen-refrigerator-dishwasher/

They are silver not steel. I've hated them since we moved in but could see myself replacing them with white (don't know why).
If I had a lovely big kitchen I would go for a huge American fridge in a colour.

I think white is old fashioned, stainless steel better. Coloured "on trend" at the moment but likely to be dated quite quickly. Can you go integrated?

Hadron21 · 22/04/2015 13:26

Oh I didn't think of steel. We can't have intergrated as the kitchen was in the house when we bought it and we wouldn't be able to match it.
Hmmm now I want a new kitchen!

White is outside of fashion for 'white goods'. Timeless.

Artandco · 22/04/2015 13:28

Can you not integrate? And just re paint kitchen cupboards so they all match? Cheap way of getting a new kitchen look

mrssnodge · 24/04/2015 15:38

My aplliances are black-, oven, hob, chimney, fridge freezer & Washing machine, but all white white gloss units- looks good- I think!!

Hadron21 · 25/04/2015 06:48

Any suggestions on how I could intergrate if I don't know where the original units are from?

I have a black fridge freezer. It came with the house. I like it though.

I cover a pastel blue Smeg but I know they are probably past it too.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 25/04/2015 08:21

I think the stainless steel American fridge-freezers still look good, but ss washing machines, dishwashers and microwaves do look a bit dated now.

Hulababy · 25/04/2015 08:33

Don't cry of they're 'past it' but I'm getting a retro style blue Smeg fridge very soon for my new kitchen.

My dishwasher will be integrated. The oven and extractor will be stainless steel though - doesn't come in white anyway and I didn't think the black would match everything else.

In the utility the washer, dryer and freezer will be white - the white is cheaper than the same models in steel anyway.

Hulababy · 25/04/2015 08:34

Cry of = care if

Floggingmolly · 25/04/2015 14:51

Smeg are past it??? Surely not?

Hulababy · 25/04/2015 19:24

I'm hoping not tbh but regardless I'm still getting one - I've hankered after that retro fridge for years and now - in the next few weeks - ill have one!

Floggingmolly · 25/04/2015 19:49

Good for you Smile I covet a red one
