Hi all, im looking for ideas for my dd's bedroom. They share and are 6 and 11. The room is currently pink and is quite small, they have single beds each side with window in the middle. Im stuck with how to redecorate, my youngest still likes little girl decor but my eldest is thinking shes too old for princesses lol ! any ideas what to do? am thinking do each side different, but also thinking bunk beds might be better to make more room for them, its quite cramped atm. help !!!

On the basis of the room being small, I think I wouldn't even attempt to do each side different. Instead, I'd identify a list of things which they can have choice over: bedding, a lamp, a bedside table or whatever. But the wall colour, flooring, window dressing etc has to be neutral and has to be mutually agreed. If they can't agree, then it's your choice.

A 6 yo will grow out of pink little girl stuff fairly soon, after all, so that's another good reason to keep the basics fairly neutral.

Let them both choose some wall stickers for the wall around their bed, whether you go for singles or bunks. With colours and bunks/no bunks I think you need to start with what they'd like and see how many of their ideas you can include. Eg if one wants pink and one purple you could do one wall of each with white for the other 2. If one wants pink and the other blue, that's harder and you might need to go for more neutral walls but let them pick their own bedding etc.

I would go for white walls, a nice set of white bunks (M&S are good) and let them each bring their colours in with bedding, pictures around their bunk. Nice curtains and a girlie but not babyish rug.

For the bunks you can get them each their own bunk bed light and we have a shelf thing on the wall so they have their own space for books, drinks etc.

The bunks meant we had more room for other furniture. Ended up with an ikea pax system as it meant we could combine wardrobes and doors easily. This included a double hanging wardrobe so they had a longish rail each.

Sorry the shelf is special narrow one for walls by bunk beds so it doesn't stick out and the shelf has a lip so drinks don't fall off. There's room for a clock, drinks a few nick nacks and an enclosed part for books.

Instead of going for two bunks could you go for two loft beds instead then they can still both have their own separate sides of the room but also get their own storage. Ikea have some good ones that aren't too expensive. www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/S19022691/

My girls also share a room, but I am about to dismantle their bunks. Bunk beds are a pain, and not worth the extra floor space they provide. When kids have bunk beds they don't have their "own" space. Their own bed they can flop on, and hang out on. The lower bunk is too cramped to sit on, and you can't sit on the upper bunk unless you climb up. We're just about to give ours our room, and we'll swap into theirs, so they can have separate beds. The ultimate sacrifice!
