Furniture for a child's room

We're moving our 4 year old into a bigger bedroom and have to replace some old falling to pieces furniture.

I want the room and furniture to last and him not outgrow it, so we've made a decision to not get a cabin bed, but a single with pull-out (in case he has friends for sleepovers etc).

But what other furniture should we prioritise? I thought perhaps a wardrobe with drawers at the bottom (so we may not need a separate chest of drawers), a bedside table, shelf unit for books. What about a desk? Or is that too grown up for a 4 year old?

Any suggestions welcome Smile

What about the ikea expedit (kallax) with the desk insert?

I love the expedit stuff.. holds a multitude

also bookcases are good but an idea is to use ikea spice racks as book holders. (google it)

I do think a solid chest of drawers are very handy as children grow older

Depends on whether you plan to store toys in his room.

My DS loves his little desk (it's an old pine dressing table really) which he got at age 5, but it's not necessary that young at all. He does homework downstairs anyway.

Re the wardrobe, think about how he will reach the hanging clothes. Could you maybe put the hanging rail in low for now, and maybe put an extra shelf for bedding or something in the space created above? Or use the main rail for out of season clothes and install a lower one for day to day use. We luckily have built in wardrobes and DC keep a step stool inside so they can reach the rail. With the wardrobes with drawers underneath, check how far back the drawers go as sometimes they are only half the depth of the wardrobe. If he needs to storetoys, consider one of those wardrobes that has a mix of hanging space and shelving.

For the bedside table I'd recommend the chest of drawers style. My DC seem to need a million drawers for their precious things and creations, and it means bedtime books can be bunged out of sight rather than annoyingly teetering in towers.
