I am just about to buy a new house which is a arts and crafts type cottage. It's pretty big but with smallish leaded windows. All the skirting and window sills in the whole house are in a dark natural wood, a couple of rooms have paneling and the sitting room has a fireplace in a full wall of panelling. What colours go with all this natural dark wood...its a really striking original feature and in beautiful condition. It would ruin it to paint it over.

I am used to an Edwardian terrace with high ceilings and sash windows so don't want to feel like I am moving to a cave. Farrow and Ball suggestions are perfect as I know the colour card off by heart. At the moment I have lots of Lime and Shaded White on the walls with Pointing on all the woodwork.

I don't actually like arts and crafts colours at all (or typical cottage style decor) which is a bit of an issue. Do I go with the natural light in the rooms as a guide as usual or try and go with colours that work with the wood??

We have an arts and crafts house with dark wood everywhere. The previous owners had F&B everywhere lots of different shades of cream and yellow. We are gradually changing it to make it slightly more contemporary and to reflect our age a bit more. The greige palette that includes wimbourne white, skimming stone and elephants breath works well. In general we are keeping walls reasonably light, as you say small leaded windows don't let much light in.
I also thought hard about the traditional rustic palette of greens, rusts etc but it really isn't my thing.
Pinterest is your friend. Dark wood very fashionable. And easy to match tons of colours to because it isn't ultra warm like mid-light oak.

Olive green works really well with dark wood. Don't have a F&B card to hand but there are some colours in that palette.

I think plain white goes well with dark wood.

Look at nicole curtis. She restore a lot of historic homes in the U.S. you might find a paint color you like: www.nicolecurtis.com/projects

Borrowed Light is lovely with dark wood I think.

Thanks everyone. I have now found a few houses that look nice on Pinterest, so far none with average height ceilings though. Honestly I think it's the wood plus lower ceilings rather than just the wood....

I think maybe I just go with what I like plus some of the light blues that I wouldn't have thought of before. I am just never going to be a person who likes rust, ochre or mid greens walls however authentic!!

Something like blackened that is a bluer grey could be nice if you are considering blue paint? It reflects nicely in different light.
