Help with bedroom furniture

My children will be doing a room swap so I need to decorate the nursery for my young teenage son.

It is the box room so a bit on the small side, I need to fit a bed and sliding wardrobe within this..

My question is, how much gap do I need between the end of the bed and the wardrobe as I need to work out what length bed to get (the longer the better).

Not what you asked, but what about a high sleeper bed with wardrobe and desk underneath? like this maybe.

ok it doesn't give much wardrobe space but with the space saved he could also have a chest of drawers or shelves.

What do you mean by the gap? Surely it depends how wide the wardrobe is and the bed, and if it fits in the space?

For what it's worth I did the same. Baby out the box room in to big room. 12 year old took box room. He has a high sleeper, with a set of drawers underneath. He doesn't have a wardrobe. All clothes are folded in drawers, and his coats, jackets, blazer and shirts are hung on pegs which are on the back of his door.

His room works really well. I can out pictures on if you would like to see?

I guess she is picturing the wardrobe facing the foot end of the bed and is asking how much space is needed in between the two so that Ds can comfortably stand in between bed and wardrobe to access his clothes. (the less space needed the longer bed she can get). Depth of wardrobe will matter yes.

I would get a mid/high sleeper but the bed needs to go under the window. It won't fit on the other walls due to where the window and door is positioned.

You are exactly right mini. I can't really judge how many cms are adequate between the end of bed and the sliding door of wardrobe. So if DS is sitting on end of bed what gap can I get away with?

Also I need to get a wardrobe so I can put a couple of my coats in (he doesn't know that yet).

Ah those pesky windows eh. I would say the minimum is about 70 cms if it's not to feel very cramped.

I'll pop a couple of pics of my DS's room on anyway, as his bed is where the window is. It might give you some ideas?

And as for space, is it standing space? I'd say at least 50cm.

It's a shame about your coats. I was going to suggest just using a chest - on the Kondo-ing threads there's some great links about vertical storage (folding things so they slot in vertically rather than laying on top of each other, Gap-style.
Frees up tons of space. Sliding wardrobes are a bit of a pain to open and close as well, ime.

This kind of thing.

Shotgun I don't think we can leave a wardrobe out as he will need to hang his jackets and school blazer. That link is great! Vertical storage! I never thought to do that. Will be reading that Kondoing thread and do some rearranging. Thanks.

Right, I did some more measuring and realised I can't even fit the bed where I wanted it as I only have a gap of 93cm between wall and door frame! After all that! Interior design is not my forte. So I can forget about my sliding door gap!

I'm going to have to put the bed lengthwise from the back wall and get a narrower wardrobe. (I was looking at an Ikea Auli before). The wall is 240cm long. I can get a bed with max width of 105cm so will leave 135cm for a wardrobe. Hopefully will look ok.

Sorry to bang on - could you put something like this on the back of the door, with hangers on it?

Shotgun please do keep on - love the creative ideas. Will look for those type of hook things for jackets. I guess because we've always had a wardrobe I think that everyone needs one!

We have very similar arrangement to Detective for our ds in the boxroom (high-sleeper over desk and sofabed). But I moved the radiator to under the window so that the wall opposite the bed can be used entirely for storage (gives me 1.6m to play with). We have .62m between the wall and window so could pop a wardrobe in there if needed. (We have a narrower unit.) Previous owner removed the skirting to fit their furniture in flush against the walls.
