Where to find a large, cheapish, ideally washable rug for DD's bedroom?

Hi, we have recently recarpeted DD's room and we're looking for a large rug to attempt to protect the new carpet a bit and add some interest. We haven't yet potty trained DD and I'm sure there will be other sorts of mess too, she is a toddler!

I think a cotton or cotton mix rug would be ideal as it would be washable. However lots of the children's rugs I find seem to be wool, and also quite small.

Where would you look for a large, child-suitable washable rug? Don't want to spend more than about 150.

It doesn't have to be an obviously childish pattern (I'd actually prefer to avoid anything too childish, ie farmyard animals etc) so I can look at adults rugs too. Something with some colour would be nice, maybe pastelly colours to go with her curtains. Stripes or spots maybe?

I've tried Ikea and John Lewis and nothing is quite right... other suggestions very welcome...

Aspace and GLtC do some nice rugs which come in a large size and patterns rather than motifs.

Thanks, I had a look but think they were all wool - will look again though!

I bought this for DD's bedroom.

She loves the colours and it's so cosy. No idea if it's washable though.

This is cute. Not machine washable though www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/70251740/

Thanks! Bunny I like that rug, and Help I like the ikea buttons one but I think I'm looking for something a bit less bright and more pastelly than either of those. argos website down at the moment but I will have a look when it's back.

I found this one which I do like but would prefer a rectangle and it also says don't wash! Argh.

this is lovely but not big enough...

suspect I'm going to have to compromise on something

I've got a nice cotton hallway runner from Dunelm - not very big but you could put 2 side by side?

It's designed for wiping feet on so very robust! & has a rubber backing so should stay put (although my cats are always sending mine flying)

or this from Ikea - all one colour though (also comes in blue & grey)

or this stripy one. I have a really nice blue/beige/brown one in the bathroom - they don't do it it any more but it washes really well

My daughter had a bath mat as a rug in her room.when she was small! I didn't go out looking for either a rug or a bath mat but she discovered a "pale green with sparkles" mat in bhs when out with my parents and HAD to have it as her sylvanians "needed" it as grass!! It washed and washed and washed!!! And is now in my school play area as ......."grass for the sylvanians"!!!!!

Look for a dhurie type rug on eBay. They have lots. Not sure they're supposed to be washable but I always do. (Might shrink a bit)

Also ikea, as mentioned.

Thanks everyone! With your help I narrowed down what I was looking for and finally have found it I think:

here

it's like a dhurrie/rag rug style. Not sure if it's washable but their other rugs are so fingers crossed... anyway it's pretty cheap so not a disaster if it gets grubby.

thanks again!

I can see you've already found something but also might be worth checking out urban outfitters. I got a very nice pastelly green rug with white spots that is washable there, for DDs room. Their homeware is surprisingly nice. Some of it anyway!

minipie · 23/02/2015 23:04

Thanks mssampson - I've ordered the other one already but just had a look at urban outfitters and you're right there are some really nice (and cheap) rugs - I will definitely keep them in mind for future.
