Are Polished porcelein tiles a bad idea in a play room?

How much work do they need to look shiny? Will I constantly be washing and buffing? Are they cold?

I am decorating a play room, it's currently very dark and cold so I had considered polished tiles as a way bouncing light around the room but if anyone has any suggestions I'm be really happy to listen.

For the floor? My first thought is slippery and dangerous.

Ohnodisaster · 16/02/2015 22:45

I would have thought rhey'd be cold, slippy and noisy.

you could probably get some light moderately shiny marble-effect vinyl flooring or even amtico, the sort they have in schools and nurseries. But spend money on some good low energy lighting you can afford to leave on in daytime as well. With light walls that should help the situation.

Not pure white as if it's a playroom worthy of the name it will get a hammering with paint, toys, etc.

Don't like the sound of that for a playroom - cold and uncomfortable to sit or kneel on.

PurpleCorsage · 16/02/2015 22:57

Can you take advantage of it being a bit dark and use lots of fun lights?

Ours has a small window with shutters but it's made to look cosy and a bit magical with lots of fairy lights and things... My girls love it and it looks great.

I'd say definite no to tiles...

MonkeySeeMonkeyDooo · 16/02/2015 23:16

No to tiles. Cold, slippery and bloody hard to fall on. Or kneel on.

We're getting Kardean in ours.

We have polished porcelain tiles in our bathroom. As much as they look great, really not practical for dc as its slippery. We had our bathroom dine pre dc, but have mats around so dds don't slip.

We're just building a playroom, and having oak flooring put down, with a huge rug.

That's a pretty unanimous vote. My DC is still a baby at the moment so I haven't properly got my head around a child-proofed house, but we're converting this room with the view to it becoming a playroom.

What are amtico and kardean floors? Are they expensive?

IMO, you'd be best off going for a cheap bit of laminate or carpet that you can easily replace in a few years when its been weed on a few times, had playdoh ground into it, felt pens left on it with lids off, black currant juice spilled on it, kids been sick on it, pizza dropped on it.....Wink

Ohh Tywysoges you speak the truth. DS has already wee'd over my living room, bedroom and bathroom floors. I have to get much more practical in my choices.

HTH - I've been there! We're only recently getting round to replacing crap carpets and things with better quality stuff, now that our DCs are older teens Grin
