Help with kitchen design

We are moving to a rented house, it is where we want to be at a price we can afford. We ae happy to spend some money on the kitchen but have no idea what to do.
The kitchen is very old and very basic, walls are tiled in grey and units are in darker grey (and not in a nice way), only 2 electrical sockets. My cooker can't fit in, there is no space for a dishwasher and the fridge freezer would be stuck on a wall by itself in the way of both doors. We could have sliding doors but I can't get over the old fashioned look of them (happy to be proven wrong for a cheap price).

The room is square with a sink under the window. Both walls to the left and right have a door in them (one to dining room and one to the hall), they both open into the kitchen flat against the back wall. We could brick up one door to create better space but dh isn't happy to walk from the hall through the lounge round the corner thru the dining room to the kitchen. I don't think that's a problem and is much better than his which was block up the dining room door! I think he's got over that idea now ;-) Would it be a problem for you and your family to walk around and through the lounge? If we did block it up there would be quite a bit more space and potentially a much more sensible layout.

If I was to get a kitchen designer to come out to see the kitchen and make a plan do they charge? Thanks. Sorry for all the questions.
