Hi, my sitting room carpet is disgusting, dh thinks we should get it cleaned professionally but I cant see that its going to be worth it, it is sooo bad, its beige. My friend has put Karndean down throughout her downstairs and its lovely...............but expensive. I just cant afford it, can anyone recommend anas good alternative? I want a grey look. Thanks :)

Don't write-off a good carpet clean. You'll be amazed what a difference it makes. Even if it just gives you a year's extra wear, it might mean you can save a bit longer for something else.

If you do go for Karndean get lots of quotes....massive differences in ours.... Actually very reasonable in the end....

Good advice Ruth,so I have contacted a local company who are going to do a free test patch so I can see the difference! The carpet isn`t worn so as you say I may get an extra year out of it. We actually have our own Vax, used it 3/4 times but it honestly makes little difference and I find the carpet takes too long to dry. Will let you know!

We have Karndean and love it. Good advice to seek out multiple quotes as there does seem to be massive variation in price but also ask for testimonials from happy Karndean clients as there are several MNers who have had bad experiences with it and I think getting a good experienced fitter is the key to success.

How does it differ from a vinyl, isn`t it just flexible strips?

I have Karndean throughout the ground floor and it was expensive, but I then did go for the top-of-the-range. In my last house I had a 'limestone' tile effect karndean, not so expensive, but it looks as good today as the day it was laid. (Def get it professionally laid) And doesn't show the dirt!

It is still vinyl, either tiles or planks, stuck to a sub-base of (I think) latex-type stuff. It's quite thick. There are cheaper versions (from China) available; don't know how good these are.

Having said that - carpet would be warmer. i lifted the floorboards and insulated under them; it would be much colder underfoot if I hadn't.
