Is putting a standard larder style fridge or freezer into a regular kitchen cabinet a fire hazard?

The only space I have for an additional fridge or freezer in my kitchen is in a standard kitchen cupboard / cabinet. My DH is worried that putting it in a cupboard which will have a closed door usually, will create a fire hazard. Is that right? We really need the extra food storage space though!

As long as there is enough ventilation - cut a hole in the top of the unit and in the kick board - it should be okay. I would get it checked by an electrician or something though.

How tight will the fit be? You need air to circulate round to the back. The 'fridge cupboards' I've seen have ventilation holes drilled into the cupboard at either the top, bottom or both, but seeing as I don't have one I haven't a clue what it will look like inside (more vent holes drilled in the back panel?). Might be worth going to some kitchen show rooms and having a look.

Can you not put an integrated fridge into the cupboard?

How about removing the cabinet and just having the additional fridge or freezer freestanding in the space? Store the carcass should you wish to reinstate it in the future.
