Dare to go dark!

Has anyone gone for a dark, dramatic colour in their home and love/hate it? We are only a short way into our house renovation but the kitchen and playroom are light and bright. The lounge is next and at the moment we are opening up the bricked up fireplace. I've got this image (and extensive Pinterest board) of a dark, cosy room with big sofas, real fire...you know the drill.
The room is east facing with a bay window and another side window that's south facing, so gets a good amount of light.
I'm lusting after dark turquoise/teal colours at the moment, but I'm slightly scared I won't pull it off. Keep telling myself it's only paint, but dark paint is a pain to get rid of!
Anyone have any experiences of going dark they'd like to share?!
Thank you.

I love dark dramatic colours and have recently done pure lounge in dark Burgundy and black with stone.
Our longer is a big rectangle shape with one wall practically all window
The 2 end walls are Burgundy and the two long walls are stone
On one long wall the chimney breast has black wallpaper with silver trees.
The other long stone wall has 2 large windows with silver silk curtains
I have a black carpet and a black corner sofa with silver cushions with tree branches
I have dark wood furniture and black chandeliers
I call it my goth room and I love it
I was sick of decorating to please everyone else and to sell houses.
I also have teal in the bedroom. It looked good still after about 3 years
O think you need to be brave with decorating just go for it.

I'm with Insancerre on this. I think it's difficult to lighten up a room that doesn't get much light, so I'd say embrace your inner Goth and go for it.

I've got a dark grey carpet too but the rest of the room is in various shades of grey, so not cosy. Plum is a great colour for cozying things up but I'd definitely go fir teal/ navy too for drama.

Don't worry about it not working: you can always change it back??

I've done it, enjoyed it for a few years, changed it back (wasn't that much of a pain), enjoyed that too. I agree with pp that you shouldn't be decorating to please anyone else. I also think you should have what you really like in the present, rather than what you think you can put up with indefinitely. Nobody's going to spend their final moments wishing their living room had been a bit blander!

We've just painted the lounge f&b estate grey, we like it and that's all that matters.

Ace...I'm going to jump in there and be brave. You're right about just doing what you love.
And thanks for sharing photos!

I've got a warm grey dining room with a red (scarlet) ceiling and white coving & woodwork. It's gorgeous.
It was daring as the rest of my house is generally white or shades of white. It's a big grand Victorian room though and it really can take it.

We've just done our hallway grey. It's quite a warm, rich grey, and is probably a little darker than I meant it to be, but it looks stunning. Very pleased with the result, and very glad we decided to stick with our colour choice even after some doubtful comments on the tester patch! :)

We also did the living room in a darker sage/moss green. It has a fireplace, with a big surround, and dark green tiles, so we were very limited on colour choices. We decided if we were going to have to use green, we'd run with it. We did one wall in very pale ivory, opposite the north facing bay window, to help bounce the light about, and did the rest of the walls green. It looked lovely with the fireplace, but I ended up getting sick of the green eventually. Picture is of the green living room just before Christmas (please excuse the dodgy edit in paint to cover names and faces!) It was actually a bit darker than it looks because of the camera flash.

Sorry, meant to add, I would happily paint another room dark if that's what I wanted. We found the green very easy to cover with a quick coat of pure brilliant white, then coat of colour ("natural hessian" this time!) We're not planning to sell any time soon, or ever, so we decorate for us. We're the ones that have to live here.

Please post pictures when you're done! :)
