Down lighters...I feel they are a bit dated..

But don't know why.

Am contemplating them, but I just saw some in another building, and thought they were looking a bit tired now.

If I put them in, will they date really quickly? < thinks of recent thread of how home interiors date>

I agree OP...we just got out kitchen fitted out and the builders were aghast that I didn't want down lighters "but every gets down lighters these days"

Umm...exactly....its a trend...in a couple of years everyone will be getting their ceilings plastered over and replaced with a pendant.

I ended up going for a crystal pendant is lovely and sparkly and bright enough despite the protests from the builders. And easily replaceable in a few years when I get sick of it and crystal pendants become dated

Downlights have been around for years, not just the last couple do I don't thinks its just a fad.

Personally I would go for a few downlighting in the kitchen and a separately switching pendant so you can have them if you want and also have a changeable feature

Are we talking about the spotlights people have recessed into the ceiling? I guess people will be fitting them for some time to come, but I think their moment of ubiquity has probably been and gone. They have pros (nothing for cobwebs to hang from; easy to ignore) and cons (bland; typically not the most pleasant light). They might end up looking a bit dated, but I think the main thing is that if you like them, you should have them, and if you don't, you shouldn't. It's very annoying to be told you should or shouldn't have something , just because everybody else has it.

If you're iffy about them now, you're going to be super-critical of them later. I'd give them a miss if I were you.

I think a lot depends on the ceiling height, they're good for a low kitchen.

I think they are useful in kitchens and bathrooms as they provide good focused light. They are dated elsewhere.

have them throughout house as I don't like seeing cables and have never seen a light fitting that has made me think wow.

we have them on a dimmer and funky control switch for different mood lighting. we have a modern house so it suits the setting. might think differently in a period house

I am just about to spend £600 getting these put in the kitchen.

I am selling this house in 3 years. Are these lights going to be a complete turn-off to would-be purchasers? What should I put in instead?

I need a crystal ball to look into the future so I can see what lights will sell this house for me in 3 years' time!

I'm just flicking through a high end kitchen magazine here jean. There are spotlights in all of them.
