what colour curtains with this wallpaper?

ok DD has a BRIGHT pink carpet in her large room. it has been both daughters sharing in there but moving one of them out into the little room to stop her keeping the younger one awake. the big room will now be the younger ones bedroom at one end and a play area at the other end.

so DD2 has chosen this wallpaper (well I think she has settled on it)

www.arthouse.com/product/opera-riviera-stripe-berry-543

it goes well with the carpet and will only be on one of the walls to stop it being overpowering. But what colour curtains should we get? I don't really want hot pink curtains too. DD wants lilac (the wallpaper won't be on the wall with the curtains) which I can see will go with the wallpaper but I am not sure if it will then look too 'mix and match'.

or I wondered about a paler pink? I don't even like pink. argh

What colour are the other 3 walls?

What about mid blue velvet? Still quite princessy. But not cloying.

LadyWithLapdog · 21/08/2014 18:09

That's quite bright overall. Would shutters/blinds work? They'd tone it all down a bit.

the other 3 walls will probably just be pale cream because it is so bright. She is very princessy and ballet obsessed but I don't want it to look sickly so yes we probably do need to look for a neutralising colour. With the pink carpet they have had pale aqua green walls which have worked really well. We only put down the bright pink carpet when we moved here because they were both so little and I thought if you can't have a hot pink carpet when you are a little girl then when can you. it was also the cheapest carpet we could get but we can't afford to replace it at the moment because it is such a big room and also the colour is great for hiding marks while she is still only 5. When it is replaced then it will be with a neutral colour.

shutters could work but are expensive and I am really wary of blinds in children's rooms even with the safety things fitted so I would prefer to avoid them.

hmm perhaps we need to rethink the wallpaper.

I agree about the carpet! There's a time and a place and it's just then, when they're so little.

What's with the safety aspect of blinds? One of mine has blinds but at 14 he rarely touches them :)

I am just slightly overwired on the whole risk assessment thing so my husband tells me. I just think if the risk of strangulation etc etc etc isn't there even as a vague possibility then it is safer.

having said that even if I go with a blind I still need to find a colour.

The safety issue is only with blinds that have looped chords. These days any that still come with looped chords have the loops screwed down. Its mainly older blinds that pose an issue.

thank you

I've just bought a lovely blind for the nursery, it's called flava from b and q and it's white with coloured line drawn flowers. Not too girly but pretty enough to satisfy your daughter?! Just keep the cord well away from their reach.

nonicknameseemsavailable · 26/08/2014 17:28

thanks Misty - yes that is pretty enough for her.

I'd go cream to tone it down.

nonicknameseemsavailable · 27/08/2014 09:30

yes cream is probably most sensible - I just thought with 3 cream walls and only one coloured one that it might then all end up looking too cream. I think i will wait until I have done the painting and papering and then see.
thanks

I think waiting until the paper and painting are done is a good strategy. But, looking at the wallpaper again I think the lilac in that for curtains would be fine. Like you said, it's the only time you'll get away with a pink bedroom. She can always have cream curtains when she's older, to tone it down. :)

thanks Misty. to her ALL colours go with each other as do all patterns...

Just wanted to say you can get cordless blinds now which are great in children's rooms. I just got one from dunelm mill for my lo's room as also worry about strangulation risk. Sure other places do them too.

nonicknameseemsavailable · 30/08/2014 22:09

I didn't realise that teapleasebob. thank you.
