I grew up with a cork floor in my bedroom (cheap glued down tiles from homebase with varnish), and despite their cheap orange colour LOVED them. I used to practice tap on them and they still looked pretty good 15yrs + later when my parents finally ripped them up. We just had wiccanders installed in our living room, which the front door opens into, I work out do yoga etc on them and it really is noticably more pleasant. My energetic son has had no end of tumbles on it and bounces straight back up.

I have to say the finishes and colours textures are way more professional than back then and the finish on my floor is a lot tougher (I went for the 15yr rather than 25yr guarantee hardtop one btw). It's a bit pricier than carpet if you get it all fitted for you (recommend you go with a small provider rather than a chain as you get better service/knowledge on cork and the big ones gave us crazy high quotes!) but its been so easy to maintain the coating is very resistant to spills (although you're supposed to mop up immediately). Erm what else? ...We went for www.wicanders.com/en/collections/corkcomfort/the-collection/Identity-Champagne/677/ (lighter than it seems) and it lightens the room a lot, keeps it warm/cool according to the time of year and I don't worry about it fading like I would a dark one. Just vacumn when needed.

I was looking at the company you are initially but decided it was too pricey/stressful to install ourselves, or find a separate tradesman to do it. The type of pattern you've chose is what I had in my bedroom (but much lighter) and I imagine it would look quite marbly (like this maybe www.wicanders.com/en/collections/corkcomfort/the-collection/Personality-Moonlight/685/ ) which is a great alternative to a light carpet, right? I'd recommend you try to find pics that show it in a set up room before you choose as I ordered samples from them and their sample choice was limited in reference to the range they offer, and often they looked so different in reality to what I was expecting.
Gawd this is an essay - I spent so long looking at this stuff myself just wanted to share my finds - last tip I'd suggest is if youre on a budget and approach an all in one company for a quote (supplier + fitter), ask if they can recommend you something, ours reduced their quote quite a bit by using some they already had in stock.

ooh thank you very helpful.
didn't even think about looking in a local carpet place.

the samples I have are tiny. they do feel very warm.

it is going into my study so a small space.

Laurie really helpful post - I'm considering cork flooring in a bathroom. I've looked at samples from corkfloor.co.UK and wasn't aware of wicanders. May I ask if you discounted corkfloor or perhaps you didn't come across them ?

lauriebear · 16/06/2014 21:04

Hey glad it helped!

Yes I did choose not to go with corkfloor in the end for several reasons - I couldn't find a good recommendation from anyone I knew about a tradesman to lay it for me who had any experience in cork, I wanted the floating floor and couldn't get samples in the colour I liked, and when I asked a couple small local companies (I live in leicestershire) that dealt with wiccanders, one offered me an amazingly good price (that included beading threshold strips etc) that worked out better than corkfloor and diy.

Thanks Laurie - I'll bear everything in mind and keep looking. I haven't found anyone local who doesn't look at me blankly when I say cork so I was going to just spring it on the builder (a bathroom isn't too big so how bad can it be??)

lauriebear · 17/06/2014 05:13

I know what you mean - I'm sure it will be fine - and cork in the bathroom sounds fantastic!! You've got me tempted now...

I went to a few local shops on the weekend too and they had no idea. I told one guy to look into it as I think it's the next popular thing!

I spoke to corkfloor and they said the floating click was easy to install, just like laminate ... although I've not layer that before either Shock

well I don't know if this helps but I'll post you a link to the blokes I recommend if you're after more quotes (they cover all of the midlands, might not help I realise if you're not in the midlands!) www.perkinsstockwell.co.uk/about-us.php
