Slate floor in kitchen?

Or am I mad? I think it is nice on bare feet, warm and looks good.
DH thinks I'm mad as it will chip and flake and absorb spills.
Anyone who has experience on this one?

Also does it look dark?

Or rather make the room look dark?

we have slate, it was here when we moved in. It needs to be sealed so as not to absorb the spills. I do like the look of it, but it is quite dark and it is naturally a bit uneven which means crumbs sometimes collect and are harder to sweep up. That really annoys me as I like to walk barefoot but I HATE the feeling of crumbs on my feet.

sleeplessbunny · 13/06/2014 20:51

on the plus side it never really looks dirty Smile

I have a dark grey slate floor and white units. It's not dark as I have French doors and a window and it's also semi open plan.
Lovely in the summer, freezing in the winter.

Love my slate floor. It has underfloor heating and looks good most of the time.

Ninetysixpercent · 13/06/2014 20:53

Oh yeah, that's the best bit, you can't tell if it's dirty Smile.

Envy at roseform, I dream of underfloor heating. I hate having anything on my feet.

I had it a number of years ago. While it always looked clean, it never actually was, even when just mopped. The uneven nature of it made it very difficult to clean.

BikeRunSki · 13/06/2014 21:43

We have one. I agree with all the positives above, but it's a bugger to clean. I'd only advise it if your dc are old enough not to drop most of their food.

BikeRunSki · 13/06/2014 21:44

It would be a good reason to get a steam mop though.

I have a dark grey ceramic non slip. Easier to clean. Same look.

JugglingChaotically · 13/06/2014 22:51

Thanks all. Youngest DC 7 and very efficient dog so no crumbs.
Debating underfloor heating too if we can stretch to it.
Cupboards will be pale, not sure re work top. Lots of windows but table is dark.
There seem to be shades of it. Anyone deliberately chosen a lighter one? Or did it look odd?

I have it in my kitchen. It's dark grey, with pinky tones in places. Very varied, and uneven, yet every day after 2 years I still look at it and adore it. I vacuum it rather than sweep, and use the steam mop occasionally, though my cleaner uses a wet mop. If you use a decent sealant it should clean up fine. Oh, and it really doesn't look too dark for the room, but I guess it depends on your natural light.

You might want to go to a local stone shop and have a look at stones which are slate coloured but not actually slate, for example basalt. They are sometimes harder and more resistant to spills.

JessieEssex · 19/06/2014 11:05

I have slate look ceramic tiles. Love love love them.
