Would you ever have a grey carpet

We have a large family room (5m square) with triple doors onto garden.

The carpet is trashed and needs replacing. Eventually we want wooden floors thought but that is a few years off as involves a new kitchen too.

The walls are a medium yellow. TV cabinet is great (ikea Smile) and the sofas are brown.

The carpet needs to be darker than we have now, to be practical.

Really my choices are medium brown or grey.

I like the grey against the yellow (and we will eventually have silver:grey blinds) but worry as the carpet is so big it will just look dreary. Also concerned that, rather than hide dirt, it will look permanently filthy.

I have seen some gorgeous grey carpets but you do have to choose carefully or it could end up looking a bit office like

I had a very dark charcoal grey carpet in my old house . It looked amazing and wore really well but was ££££

I worry about the office ness - am thinking a Berber weave, rather than the more grooved effect as that does remind me of photo copiers Grin

The brown looks OK but doesn't make me excited (as much as a carpet can).

There is a mid grey and a darker charcoal.

I actually think the darker charcoal looks less 'dirty ' than the mid grey.

I would certainly consider grey. If it's a large space could you break up the grey with a fabulous big rug?

Ihateparties · 25/05/2014 12:56

Yes. Really like it, agree re shade being tricky. Doesn't look grubby, been down a year with 3 under fives so it's doing okay in my book.

The one next to the cabinet is the mid-grey and the one next to the wall is the dark grey

I think I'd go for a lighter grey ,but definitely nicer than the brown .

The lighter one is lovely ( and would go very nicely with the Harris Tweed Sofa that I'm lusting after at the moment) .

My friend has got a slate grey (grey/blue) carpet the same shade as this, which looks fabulous with oak furniture and walls in a light hessian / taupe.

I have that light grey in my stairs and hate it with a passion. I was dying for a grey carpet but I can't wait to change it.
Sorry Blush

Absolutely go for the grey!

I have a black carpet and it is marvellous, albeit in need of vacuuming quite a lot.

newrecruit · 25/05/2014 15:52

Why do you hate it cocolepew?

Don't know

It never looks clean and it's dull, there's just something about it I don't like. It's a bit boring.

SunshineOutdoors · 02/06/2014 18:42

I have an ace light grey carpet, almost silver looking I love it. It's a dirt forgiving colour but still looks light and bright.

Percephone · 02/06/2014 21:16

I have light grey and I think it shows up the dirt actually. You can see a grubby patch in doorways and on the stairs (maybe we are just filthy? Blush). I thought it was darker than it turned out to be because once the pile flattened it appeared lighter if you see what I mean. I'd go for a dark grey.
