Hate the pass thru between the kitchen and the dining room

Any ideas of how to tastefully close it off. DH boarded it up, but it looked awful, DS suggested glass! Any ideas, I really don't want an eye sore in my kitchen.

I mean, that hole you have in the wall between the kitchen and the dining. It's normally used for passing food!

A serving hatch?

Could you cover it up on the dining room side? Maybe a nice sideboard with a long mirror above? At least that would cover one side.

Personally I would get it bricked up and plastered over.

We had one of these in our 70's house, we had it bricked up and plastered over, really simple job for a builder.

They're back in fashion! Get some wooden windows / doors fitted to that size painted to a f&b type paint ?? seriously though I fell in love with one house we viewed because of it's very quaint serving hatch done up as above.

We've just blocked ours up and had it plastered over, very happy with the result

It has to go! I hate it when I cook despite opening all windows and doors, the smell of cooking goes through, it reminds me of the open plan in my last place.

If we have to do bricks and plastering, we'll have to change the wall paper in the dining/ living room and tiling in the kitchen - too much work!

Would toughened glass with lovely designs not look nice?

Nope it will always look like a hatch you haven't got round to bricking up yet.

In the kitchen side you could put a marble mosaic over the plaster and big picture in the dining room, or dresser.

We didn't use bricks to block ours up. We used wood and plaster. Great result

Girlwithnotattoos · 27/04/2014 21:05

Forgot to mention that ours had been filled in by previous owner with 'trendy' glass brick blocks - and it looked crap, also meant that we had a wall in both dining room and kitchen that couldn't be used.

In my old house I put a dresser in front on the dining room side, and a large pinboard over it in the kitchen.

In my current house we had an internal window, which a builder blocked with plasterboard and skimmed over.

I would love a hatch. They are of their time. And are back in vogue I think too. Just leave it is my view.

can you hang a big print over it on dining side ? and make it into a spice shelf on kitchen side ?!
