My whole house is going to be grey... Help! I'm addicted to grey.

I need to choose colours for the walls for my living room, dining room and hallway. I have every colour chart going, but I only like shades of grey haven't even read the book My bedroom is already grey: would it be hideous to have various shades of grey throughout my house? I think I already know the answer.
P.S. I know this is a terribly dull quandary.

I love grey walls, especially for rooms that face north and tend to be dingy - the grey walls soak up the external greyness.

However, I only use grey on the walls. The rest of the room is other colours. I cannot fathom the concept of a grey carpet!

LaurieFairyCake · 31/01/2014 14:16

SomewhatSilly - it's going to be one wall in a very light living room. Then I've bought a stencil which looks like one of those antique tin tiles and I'm going to stencil the whole thing in either (can't make up my mind) white or silver paint. I've got chalk white which is more like tin tiles look like but I also think a silver paint could look good too.

A massive decision Wink

TunipTheUnconquerable · 31/01/2014 14:19

Just stick to grey paint not grey carpets and tiles, and then when the fad finishes it'll be easy to change.

I personally hate entire houses in grey, but it's your house and you like it and that's what counts!

IHaveSeenMyHat · 31/01/2014 14:21

Grey is the new magnolia?

Aw, really. But I love grey!

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 01/02/2014 11:35

Do it!I love grey on walls,it's clean and quite relaxing and a million times better than magnolia, cream and bloomin beige!

My living room and dining room are pale grey (dulux polished pebble) with plum and pewter feature walls, oak furniture and plum accents.

Ds room is pale grey (polished pebble again) with a bright green painted feature wall then the same on the alcove on the opposite side of the room.White furniture, green desk in the middle of one wall and green curtains, on the Windows either side of the desk.black white and grey stripey carpet- looks awesome!

My bedroom is pale grey (yep, polished pebble lol) with a grey and black gorgeous tree/bird print vertical pattern papered feature wall, black gloss furniture, black curtains then crisp white bedding with green and light teal bits on it,then green and light teal accents.Wanted red but it would look a little odd lol

Hall and stairs are a greyed white with black and white flick carpet/maple laminate, and Harliquine Silhouette wallpaper as a feature wall (went for the metalicy matt silver background) and looks lovely.I could marry that wallpaper I love it so much lol

Kitchen and bathroom are greige because grey wouldn't go with the units and tiles!

Grey is great for decorating and just a few bits of strong colour look amazing against it.

Tillyscoutsmum · 01/02/2014 11:37

My new bedroom is grey. The hall, stairs and landing are grey. The lounge/dining room/kitchen are "maraschino mocha". It's kind of a purply grey Wink

Tillyscoutsmum · 01/02/2014 11:38

Oh and the stairs/landing carpet is grey/beige/blue striped. Wood floors in the hall and lounge. Dark grey carpet in the bedroom

yegodsandlittlefishes · 01/02/2014 11:40

Grey carpets look great in some settings, preferably with a good nubbly texture or flecked with different shades.

Please avoid prison cell or battle ship shades for the walls of moderate or smaller rooms!

OnePlanOnHouzz · 02/02/2014 17:03

Grey on walls works well with tan leather furniture and warm honey wooden flooring ( as these add warmth ) also with other bright colours for a bold look - or with several pale shades (pale pink, pale blue, pale mushroom etc ) so if you keep a storage box with alternatives - you can change your accessories with the seasons ! The key is white woodwork - although that said, I recently saw grey with cream windows and skirting and French style furniture and it looked stunning !

Bonsoir · 02/02/2014 17:48

DD's room is grey with white ceiling, cornices, woodwork and panels above the door frame and beneath the window. The floor is honey coloured patina'd parquet and we have recently added a rug in a Marni-esque geometric flower pattern in shades of grey and grey green. Her furniture is a mixture of pale pink and antique wood apart from her bookcase which is dark grey with a bubble-gum pink inside. She has plenty of decorative interest in the lighting, pictures etc that we have picked up in antique and design shops/websites.

I'm back. Sorry for the post and run. Hope you weren't worrying that I'd drowned in a sea of colour charts. So, I'm really not bothered that grey is in fashion or that it will be the next magnolia. I just like the way it's a colour, but not a colour and you notice it, but you don't (that makes no sense I know-blame the tester pot fumes). I'm so glad there are other grey addicts. Anyway, in the spirit of trying to wean myself slowly, I have decided to venture a bluey grey in the hall/landing area and I suppose what you may call 'taupe' or that rank work 'griege' for the small tv room. Any recommendations? I like Little Greene and F&B colours but the ones I end up choosing are just grey grey.

Little greene French grey mid

Pannacotta · 02/02/2014 22:35

For a taupe grey try Elephants Breath which is a good base colour and sets of brighter colours and artwork really well.
Not sure on blue grey as I tend to use the warmer greys.

Theonlyoneiknow · 02/02/2014 23:26

My whole house is pretty much grey!

I have the same pale grey carpet throughout and timeless on all the walls (except the kitchen). There is a dark grey sofa in the lounge and am toying with a dark grey fireplace wall ??? The en suite is dark grey gloss and I have a grey shipdeck flooring in the bathroom and cloakroom (quickstep Lagune shipdeck). I love grey!! To go with the pale grey carpet in bedrooms I have white stained oak furniture (ikea) as it has flecks of grey on it.

SilverSixpence · 04/02/2014 00:41

Love grey too, want to do both my daughters room and our living room in grey. I would have had whole hall grey too but we don't get much light in there so have reluctantly stuck to white.

Bonsoir · 04/02/2014 09:06

My hall is currently white and also quite dark (no windows, though a lot of light comes through from the adjoining rooms that have glass doors) and I am thinking of painting it grey above the dado rail, so leaving the bottom bit and the cornices and ceiling white. I think it may look brighter than way.

crazykat · 04/02/2014 10:22

Our bedroom, living room and kitchen are grey, black and silver. It wasn't done on purpose but it looks nice.

In the living room we've got silver and black patterned wallpaper on the chimney brest and the rest of the walls are grey. I've got silver and red cushions on the sofa for a bit of colour.

In the bedroom the walls are grey and we've got red curtains and a mix of bedding sets in black, white and red.

It sounds boring but we like it. The bathroom and hallway/landing/stairs have plenty of colour - burnt orange and lime green in the bathroom and light and mid plum in the hallway/landing/stairs.

bamboostalks · 04/02/2014 10:28

This grey obsession is definitely getting dull, several friends have redone their whole houses in shades of grey. It's all looking samey, if I see another elephants breath with white accent....I will find it hard to be complimentary. It's dull IMO.

bamboostalks · 04/02/2014 10:29

Not to mention all the grey hand painted kitchens, there're breeding where I live.

TunipTheUnconquerable · 04/02/2014 11:01

Yeah, grey can look incredibly elegant but often gets used because people think it'll be a shortcut to elegance and it turns out to be a shortcut to drab....
