We have a kitchen diner - open plan extension off living room. Extension has a big window, French doors and a sloped roof with two small velux windows. The lighting is currently two sets of track lighting / spotlights running across width of kitchen diner. I find the lighting quite harshand the lights blind me if sat at dining table in certain seats and we get weird shadows too. I want softer but still decent lighting for dull days. We've no wall cupboards so that under cabinet lighting isn't an option. Where can I get advice on / ideas about lighting? Do you get lighting specialists who can come to your home or am I making it too complicated? Would like a simple fix that doesn't involve too much messing with walls and ceilings. Also, something low energy would be an added bonus. (Paint is so much easier in comparison - tester pots lol! - but still takes me ages to decide that!) How to you decide when you can't try before you buy with lighting?! Thx!

I have a thing about lighting too! I'm really fussy, as I hate the harshness of overhead lights, but want enough light to be able to see well - especially in a kitchen!

Are the lights you have something like these? We used to have something similar in our old kitchen, and I really liked them. I had to adjust the angles on them though when we moved our dining table as I got glare.

Ella - these are ours:

We have one track with six lights and another with five.

Would love to add some wall lights or something softer but I think they'd be tricky to fit.

We have LEDs inset into the ceiling and on dimmer switches. So, when not needing the very bright light (which is perfect for when actually using the kitchen for cooking) we can dim the lights right down.
We actually like very bright light (SAD) but it's nice to be able to soften it from time to time.

Dimmers are a great idea, thx! Will investigate. I like bright light too - hate energy saving bulb dingyness too. Just v fussy :)
