I'm rubbish at painting (get bored easily and the idea of having to choose a colour leaves me unexcited) but I'd like to do a decent job on a bedroom. So the plan is

  1. Remove polystyrene coving
  2. Remove wallpaper
  3. Clean down paintwork and sand
  4. Dulux trade white the ceiling
  5. Choose some random whiteish dulux trade for walls and paint.
  6. Paint coving white and stick up

I'm leaving woodwork until after the carpet is put down.

So tips on best brushes, techniques and what I've got wrong above would be much appreciated. Oh and if you could choose the one colour for the entire house I'd be grateful.

I'm also no expert at painting but thought I'd answer with my only top tip - make sure you put masking tape up to get the lines right on the ceiling/door frames/skirting boards Grin What sort of colour were you after, neutral or bright/bold? Off-white would work for the whole house and be nice and light, and you could could do one wall a different colour in bedrooms/living room to break it up a bit.
No advice re bushes but you could ask at a DIY store.

90% of re painting is in the prep....so don't rush it

I don't rate dulux at ALL (sorry!)

harris brushes are great....also,i like the coverage of painpads for large areas

I like dove grey rather than white or the usual magnolia

Two coats of flat and one of gloss/eggshell/ satinwood on top. Ensure you sand before the flat. Sound OTT but really helps to stop the chips etc.

Use rollers for glossing doors as well as for emulsion.

Thanks for the tips

Thedrugs Ah yes, lots of masking tape ! I'm looking for a neutral. I was thinking the same through the house to tie it together. Or on those colour cards using one neutral colour and then one colour deeper here and there.

Spirulina I was thinking dulux trade for the ceilings and then perhaps get trade colour matched. I picked up dulux's colour pamphlet this evening and there's not a single color I love. Is this why you don't like dulux or is it the makeup of the paint. I don't have the time, money or I confess interest to think about high end brands (I'm happily devoid of F&B envy).

Lagoon my worry is my impatience ! Is the flat then gloss approach for woodwork only ? I spent 5 mins in B&Q this evening and chickened out from buying anything as I couldn't figure out what type of paint I need. My plan is to get the ceiling done at a bare minimum before the carpet is fitted but I don't think I need a wipeable finish for a ceiling...

I think I need to buy painting for dummies...

B&q valspar range.... Better coverage than dulux, slightly cheaper and they mix any shade up for free!!

Yes just for woodwork. Really helps keeping it robust.
