WOODBURNERS

Not sure if this is home decoration or DIY- but...

can anyone tell me about installing a wood burner? we have a coal fire with full chimney etc though the grate is quite small. How would we go about installing a wood burner ( or rather get someone to do it). Do you need to have the grate adapted so the burner fits, if there isn't enough space- is it a really big and costly job?

£500-£1k minimum, you need to get a load of quotes.

I think it is common for the whole grate to come out leaving quite a big space behind if its a fairly old chimney, usually plenty of room for a wood burner.

Ours is a bit different, it sort of sits in front of where the grate used to be which is now just a vertical flat board in the space inside the fire surround/mantelpiece. The flue comes straight out of the back of the stove into a hole in the board. Means the stove sort of sits out quite a bit into the room, but it looks fine, and kicks out lots of heat, so I'm not complaining.

There are loads of specialist companies around who fit stoves these days, they'd be best place to go.
