Wall art dilemma for master bedroom. Buy or make my own (gulp).

Please can anyone advise?

Been trying to complete our bedroom decor for ages, but haven't seen anything that would look good on the wall behind our bed.

The room doesn't get much light, so the wall colour is white, and the bedlinen and curtains are mainly white, but with silky grey and mink panels, bought from Next a while ago. Carpet is cream, goes well with the mink. We've also added a little mauve bits to break things up a bit.

Mainly a fresh, cool room, nothing really feminine (apart from a few nick-nacks) and I want to keep with that theme if possible.

The wall is long so whatever goes on it needs to be long widthways.

The idea I had was to paint some wooden letters in grey, mauve and mink, to spell out the word tranquility, and mount them on a white wooden plaque to go on the wall, so it matches in with the decor. Does that sound daft?

The downside is, I am veeerry clumsy, and can see me making a right royal pigs ear of it....dh despairs at my, ahem, previous painting attempts...Hmm Hmm, so buying is probably the more sensible option than Dulux being named in a divorce petition ..

Any ideas apart from this one? Any advice appreciated.

I've bought 4 hugely-reduced artist canvases from The Range today and plan to create some personalised wall art with 2 of them.

I'm going to cover them (using a staple gun) with our curtain fabric after doing a SIMPLE leaf applique on them.

Perhaps you could do something similar using your colour scheme?

Hi doglover, not a bad idea! I could buy a long canvas, there is a few there because I went to The Range yesterday too, for inspiration.

I need to cover it with something white, and buy the wooden letters to paint, or find material with that colour scheme to cover it. I take it thats what you meant?

You've definitely given me something to think about, thats for sure Smile

Get on Pinterest and search how to wall art or DIY wall art and you will get lots of ideas and step by step how-tos.

I made ours in our bedroom - I had got a lovely duvet set which was quite unusual and combined aubergine, turquoise and pink so I bought a single duvet set and cut the embroidered bit out and stapled it round a canvas.

Ooh duvet good idea too, thanks. I'm off this Wed so going to look for a cheap duvet or wallpaper and take it from there Smile

well it seemed the only way to tie together the colours I liked from the duvet set, I could find canvasses etc which had 2 of the 3 colours but not the turquoise with the aubergine even though it looks fantastic. I thought this way I could then have turquoise bedding or other accents without it looking odd. It worked really well but you do need a good staple gun and a LOT of staples to pull it tight enough.

Wallpaper is another excellent way to do something similar. I got a sample of wallpaper from a shop which I loved but hubby said it was FAR too expensive to use so I have framed it instead and put it on a plain wall :o)
